I can’t speak for everyone here but for me I already have a bunch of Patek pieces and none of them are of the “I weigh a ton” PM variety. As such, the 5711 I’d say is pedestrian with no complications and is grossly overpriced on the secondary market. If you can pull that surplus value out of it then why not?

It’s been posted on here before, but Aurel Bacs thinks the 5711 is as close to perfect as any watch can be: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uPnTOc...ature=youtu.be
Now, what Aurel Bacs thinks is the perfect watch may not be what you think is the perfect watch. However, he has been around the finest watches on the market, so if he says the 5711 is close to perfect, whether you agree or not, I don’t think you can say the 5711 is all hype. |

I would do that trade in an instant.
The real comparison is between the Platona and 5980, which is a much closer call.

Don’t do it. It sounds like the 5711 is your most valuable watch and your prized possession. Wearing it a few times a year and treating it like the jewel that it is is completely understandable. You said yourself that you love the watch. That tells me that you’ll regret the trade, and when it comes time to sell the Platona, you’ll have a much harder time than you did selling the 5711. You’ll also have a much harder time finding a 5711, not to mention one with your name on the papers. Enjoy your 5711 and save up for a grey market Platona in the future. |

First and foremost, do the deal if you will truly wear and enjoy a PM Daytona more than the Nautilus.
The Platinum Daytona is my least favorite personally, so I would opt for a SS model plus cash back... However I don't think I would ever make this trade personally. I biased and the 5711 is my favorite watch. |

Just curious - are there any owners of blue 5711 who actually sold it for a platona?
For those who did not, what are your reasons for not swapping your lower MSRP SS watch to a higher MSRP platinum watch? Surely, it makes good economic sense and a quick ticket to get into an ownership of the king of Rolex? Given the response in this thread, I assume most will do the trade? |

Such different references ... I can’t imagine two more opposite wearing experiences
I think you really need to figure out why the 5711 isn’t getting the wrist time. My only thought I’d that you’d be jumping into a watch that’s at the other end of the spectrum in terms of feel on the wrist. |

I would take the platona. The 5711 - 3 years ago, no one wanted one. Everyone thought it was ugly, including myself. However, we all want what we cannot have and our taste also mature. A 5712 - is my dream watch now. However, a 5711 at 24k, 27k, even 30k - okay. But at 50k. NO WAY. You can only capture the value if the gain is realised.

If you don't wear it much, why not trade it for something that you would wear often? I own and love my 5711, and it has a ton of sentimental value to me. Having said this, if that was not the case, and if it did not get wrist time, I would certainly trade it for something else that would! The Platona is a beautiful watch, and the ceramic bezel makes it easier to wear that watch as a beater even at its price point. Good luck with your decision! |

two different watches, If I wear you I'd honor having my name on that 5711 for its legacy, simplicity and scarcity. Yet if you r not a watch lover and desire value for money pls go ahead and buy a 1 KILO gold bar and spare a couple of grand$ in your pocket as well.
Think twice before acting that. Piece is the most wanted watch. I can't even think of "giving" mine away.. |

For me absolutely yes , because I will actually have joy wearing the Platona vs rarely wearing a 5711 and stressing when I do. And let the brokers worry about for how long the 5711 inflated price will continue

deciding to both own & wear the 5711 is the hurdle to complete enjoyment.

If I could enjoy wearing a nautilus or an aquanaut for that matter I would own them now , but since wearing them is a so stressful it actually feels like a burden has been removed from my shoulders and believe me I am stubborn I did try, but finally I have decided to let them me go and I am much much happier Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It’s not clear in the first post if you have an actual offer for an even trade, but if so I’d go for that deal. I suspect if not the difference to trade to the Daytona is more than you might think. Platona values also seem to have risen a bit, like everything else. I also wonder if 5711’s are actually changing hands at figures that are close to asking prices to end users. I think there’s definitely a 5711 bubble and looking at asking prices on Chrono24 could give one a very skewed view of the market. Do any of you know anyone (end user, not dealer) who has bought “used” 5711 recently?

I respectfully disagree. In the past 5 years sales of BNIB 116506’s have dipped - the data is in TRF classifieds. In 2013 a BNIB netted $70K and now $65K. Sales of pre-owned are also flat to lower, going from $55-59K down to $53-56K. I’m not saying the Platona is a bad watch - I loved mine - but it is not on the rise by any means. Personally I would.
5711 is a very expensive steel watch at $30K, a comparable watch AP 15400 at less than $19K. I would grab the opportunity to get the Platona. |

What you say is true, that when they first came out they were (like most Basel releases), not heavily discounted. And compared to 2013, I imagine they are less expensive. But in the interim I can tell you that two years ago, you could source a new (gray) one for low 50s and a nice, used one for mid-40s. Compared to those days, they are on the rise. Compared to when it was first released, not so much.

I was using TRF prices. Is that where you saw those lower prices?
New ones have never been at that level since 2013 anywhere I looked. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Is it the 5711R or the SS ??
I'd take the 5711R any day... They're not even in the same league! The SS, on the other hand, uuhmm... go for it. PS: Not a huge Daytona fan, I only own 1 Daytona in my collection, the 116515, choco dial & leather strap. |

I had an email conversation with one of TRF's most trusted sellers, and he offered a new one for $51k in December 2016. I bought a slightly used one from same seller in December 2016 for mid-40s.

OK - I did a similar deal too here on TRF.
But don’t you agree the general range of prices is flat on preowned? If the OP did the trade for a Platona, it wouldn’t be new after wearing it and would only fetch the same range of value we’ve been discussing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
