Does anybody buy so called “lesser” brands after Rolex?

Hey guys. Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. I have a watch on order that I fell in love with. I have to wait 2 weeks as it’s coming directly from omega. I really wanted a more daily stainless piece to add to my 2 tone skyD.

I actually purchased the watch secondary, but it came with some undisclosed damage so I sent it back. I found an AD to order it brand new for me so that’s where I am as of now.

Anyway, it got me thinking of how many people buy so called “lesser” brand watches after owning higher end pieces?

Fwiw, I’m in no means hating on Omega in any way, as I think for the value it is a hell of a bargain. It also feels/looks very high end. I was just wondering, because since I started watch collecting, I’ve gradually spent more and more on timepieces.

In my eyes, it’s easier to buy the more expensive watches first. After spending 19k on a watch the omega price suddenly feels normal. This could become very dangerous. Lol. And since we all love pics here are a few!

Not touching anything that comes from a big group. Not a fan of anything that doesn’t come from Geneva either.

Of course! Even after owning Rolex, many other watches still catch the eye.

How is Omega a lesser brand?

Absolutely.

I'm a daily integrator of Swatches, Invictas, Bulovas, Luminox's, G-Shocks, Oakleys, Techno Marines, and others - with my Rolexes, Pateks, AP's, Girard Perregaux's, Tiffany, Breitlings, and Richard Mille. I even have several regular wearers that are less than $30.

People think its funny, but to me they're like my children, I love them all equally.

I also think I am probably in a small minority of Forum members who love Rolexes, but hardly find them to be the be all-end all of watches.

Yeah I'm personally fed up with the AD games. Not sure gonna buy Rolex going forward since nothing's available at the ADs and pre-owned prices are steadily creeping up.

Other brands offer a better overall buying experience (Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko)...and they are not 'lesser' or 'minor' brands.

It’s a Lester brand, not necessarily a lesser watch. Big but subtle difference there ;).

Yep, Doxa for fun summer watch. Nomos, Cartier, and Lange for dressier. There’s far more than one drug to feed this addiction.

Yes! My next acquisition will be a Grand Seiko spring drive GMT. I love the idea of a mechanical automatic watch with the accuracy of a high end quartz timebase and NO BATTERY.

The "lesser" term may not earn you too many friends LOL

I've had several Omega watches and they are terrific and I don't feel they are any "less" than Rolex except in the cost on the secondary market. Love that SMP chrono by the way.

I started off because all my life I wanted to own a Rolex. But after finding this board and learning so much about watches I have picked up watches from many different companies.

There is so much beyond Rolex in this hobby. I feel bad for anyone that only discovers watches from one source.

It's all relative. There's room in the watch box for things much "lower" and higher, than Rolex.

My new and first Omega, a 43.5mm seamaster on rubber, has been getting 80% of my wrist time this past month. Nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, some other brands have some very unique options.
End of the day, it’s nice to have multiple watches from different price points and manufacturers. A lot more fun that way, IMO.

I still love Omega and thinks that certain models are better than Rolex. But I have since decided I no longer wants a Tag Heuer. But that spot in my mind has been replaced by Tudor.

I tried the seiko mod route with one watch. I paid someone in Asia to build one for me. Cost $850. The base watch was I think a $250 SKX... For a long time, I put it in my field watch box and have offered to give it to my brother for free. But he hasn't visit me since the pandemic, and I have found that I need a watch like that when I go to the lake where I know sunscreen will get on it; and I hate getting sunscreen on my watch. So now I'm thinking I want to keep it for that purpose. A watch guy's field watch.

So I think it's just part of the journey on what I want in a watch. I'm told as I go futher into the journey I will get into vintage watches. I don't think that's going to happen, but you never know. And Rolex is a defining milestone in my journey. It's the period where I have very little tolerance for bad time keeping or poorly executed lumes. And it definitely adjust my mind to how much I'm willing to spend on a watch.

I won’t touch an Omega with a 10 foot pole after my experience with their official service center. They also pump out too many limited editions just like Panerai.

Again my own personal experience here! I’m careful if purchase any brands belonging to large conglomerates.

I’ve been wanting a much “lesser” watch recently, but specifically for activities like beach/pool/outdoor activities where there’sa higher probability of loss or damage. But now we’re talking sub-$500.

I don’t buy “lesser” watches just some that cost less. Over the last 30+ years I have had Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Panerai, Tudor, Eberhard, Hublot, Oris, Seiko, and lots of microbrands you’ve never heard of. Loving watches but having nothing but Rolex is very boring.

I've been considering an Omega Seamaster 300 white dial on rubber, but I have also worn nothing but Rolex since the mid 90s. Feel like I don't know much about Omega so I am hesitant to add it....

I bought Lange, FPJ and Moser before I bought my first ever Rolex. So yes, I do buy lesser brands after buying higher end stuff. Hehe.

I bought a blue dial Tudor Pelagos after my 114060 and enjoyed it for a little while, but ultimately moved on from it as it just wasn't getting wrist time over my 114060 and Speedy Pro.

The Speedy Pro was my first big watch purchase followed by a Polar 16570, Breitling Super Ocean II and then my 114060. I've since moved on from the Polar 16570 and Breitling, but will never let go of the Speedy Pro and 114060 (unless I'm lucky enough to one day have a son to pass it down to).

Of course.

As much as I like Rolex, there are way too many good watches to limit oneself to one brand or even to luxury watches.

To do so, is just plain silly.

Yep. Have my Rolex but enjoy Omega, Bell and Ross and Gshock which are in my collection. To be honest my most recent acquisition was the seamaster 300m and I am blown away by the quality and depth to the watch. Genuinely made me question how Rolex can charge what they do for a Sub.

I think if you have a watch problem like most of us do then it’s fun to have a diverse collection.

Wouldn't call it a lesser brand but it is less expensive

FWIW, I wear this one the most too
