How much is your annual transportation expense?

I’m not retired yet but reading that most in retirement spend some 7000-9000
annually.

I’d hope to be spending much less….? Any hints??

Park your car in the garage, make some popcorn, grab a beer, put on your snuggie and watch TV all day.

Not bad! I was thinking more on the lines of buying a Bentley or a Benz now and pay it off before retirement hoping that I was buying quality and it would last for 20 years!

My luck I would end up with a lemon

drive a beater Toyota Prius, I’m currently working from home due to Covid, but

For my side job as real state investor, the Prius is perfect because I don’t want my tenants to see me driving something expensive.

My Toyota Highlander is 20 years old. I plan to be buried in it.

a) Get an electric push-bike.
b) Buy a house near a bus stop.
c) Sell your cars and use the dough on cabs.
d) Get a 'girlfriend/boyfriend' with their own car.

or.....get one of these, and have some fun. (And maybe go out in a blaze of glory)

Registration = $700. p.a.
Insurance = $500. p.a.
Petrol = $1300. p.a.
Servicing = $100. p.a. Done by me.
Maintenance = $500. p.a. (unplanned contingencies.)
TOTAL = $3100. p.a.

I have maintained two cars in this manner for the last 10 years since retiring. Need to be good cars to start with. If you are working with luxury imports then the sky is the limit.

This excludes the initial cost of the vehicle. The cost of buying or leasing gets you right back to your $7-9k number. Driving isn't cheap!

Pick up a used 5-7 year old Camry for 17k. Drive into the ground.

Bentleys are expensive to maintain and drive, especially that W12, dual supercharged engine.

A Benz can last a lifetime, although you do need to do some maintenance from time to time. Most of the time folks change their MB because they just want something new, not because there is anything really wrong with it.

I have an 8 year old ML350, and a 10 year old E350 that have been trouble free and still going strong. I traded in an older SL for the ML because a 2 seater wasn't able to do what I wanted any more, not because there was anything wrong with it.

Too bad that royalties deal for C.P.O. Sharkey didn't work out better.

Depreciation is a huge cost if buying new. Don’t forget that part.

I have a Lexus GX that just turned 104k and rolls along without a squeak. Awful mileage though. But who cares…it’s paid for!

Interesting information. I am going to do some math and figure this out for my family. I will add in the cost of the vehicle and the annual depreciation to the numbers listed by some other members. Should be interesting.

Good point, but even a used Bentley or M-B is going to depreciate faster than most other cars.

I looked into Bentley, but they are real money pits as they age. I've also heard horror stories of M-B ownership, although for me personally, it wasn't a bad experience, albeit a bit boring to drive.

As noted above (in Australian dollars) annual costs aren't that great, it's going to be mostly gasoline and depreciation that's gonna get you. It also depends on how much you plan to drive, where you go (vacations, etc.) and what kind of activities you may be doing.

You might want to consider a pickup truck, if you like to putter around the house and/or have hobbies like wood working.
