(Incoming!!) My first Platinum timepiece!
Incoming 2019 Cartier Privé Tonneau in Platinum revealed at SIHH! This watch is perhaps my most special Cartier purchase yet, as it’s my first Platinum timepiece and limited-edition Cartier (#36/100).
Tonneau is French for “barrel”. One of Louis Cartier’s greatest contribution to the horological industry was his pervasive vision that watches do not have to be round like pocket watches. In 1904, he designed the Santos (a squarish watch) for his friend Alberto Dumont and just 2 years later in 1906, the Cartier Tonneau - making the Tonneau the second oldest Cartier timepiece and the first timepiece with the Tonneau-shaped case. In fact, the Tonneau may be the first Cartier watch to be commercialised by the Maison since the Santos was initially just a gift to Dumont. The Tonneau shape would next be adopted by Vacheron Constantin in 1912, and then gradually inspire other brands as well over the next century such as Richard Mille (where majority of its pieces are barrel-shaped) and Frank Muller. The curved sapphire crystal, dial and arched case are almost curved such that they are parallel to each other, creating the illusion of conformity to the wrist. The gorgeous Ruby Cabochon, a signature of Platinum Cartier timepieces, together with those blue Breguet-styled hands and applied numerals are just icings on the cake. Manually winding this watch is also such a joy. All in all, a great rendition of a historic and mythical watch. I’m glad Cartier revisited it in 2019’s Collection Privé, starting with the Crash in 2017 and the Tank Cintrée last year. Cartier is on the right track ��  And some other press pics because I cannot do this piece justice

That’s a beautiful watch. Please post some wrist shots too.
I’ve been close a few times on picking up one of the older Privé models (monopusher) but haven’t got there just yet. A Cartier is a must. |
