Patek 5270P messing with my head...

When the 5270P was released I was immediately drawn to it…and then I had the pleasure of trying one on a couple of months ago, and I was smitten! I made the mistake of seeing how Chrono24 was valuing my collection this morning, and things got very complicated very quickly!

Firstly, I know that Chrono24 values are inflated and as such this is not an exact science, but broadly speaking if I assume I would pay the asking price of a 5270P on Chrono24, it is reasonable to apply the logic that I would sell at the selling prices on Chrono24 – neither is true, but both should be equally incorrect!

My current collection is:

Patek Nautilus 5990
Audemars Piguet 15450 Blue Dial
Audemars Piguet Offshore
Rolex Daytona 116519 LN
Rolex GMT 126710 BLRO
Rolex Sea Dweller 116600
Jaeger LeCoutre Reverso GMT
Omega Speedmaster Reduced
TAG Microtimer

Based on some fag-packet maths (with some rounding)…this collection could be transformed into…

Patek Philippe 5270P
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15450 Blue
Rolex Sea Dweller 116600
Omega Speedmaster Reduced
TAG Microtimer

If I’m being honest, this is probably too much of a leap for me as I’m just not sure I can say goodbye to the Daytona or the Nautilus. But…if it were you…would you??

Are you not ignoring the buy/sell margin in your assumption - probably 20-25%?
Great collection.

Did something like this a few months ago.

3940J + 5170G + 5980/1A = 5270P

Never looked back and always happy to see the 5270P on my wrist.

i Think that’s a a good idea on the trade. U should be able to negotiate on both ends if you are going to a grey. If I had to trade more to get it I would.

Ur 5990 likely goes USD 12-15k above msrp at a grey.

I think it is tempting to get a grail watch like the 5270 by liquidating your collection in these times, it is a very personal decision as you know getting many of them back would be a huge hassle should you want to reverse it.

This is a really tough one. I have thought about doing the same but if you will miss some watches it may not be the right time...

I was in your position and have recently picked up the 5270P from AD. There are many loves in life, but I have only one wrist. So I'll rather spend time to the one that I love the most and wear it more often. I wear the 5270P daily now, and its feel great. Can't stop looking at the beautiful face.

I know resale is important, but it is hard to judge Patek prices when the watch is still in production. We will know when the 5270P is discontinued in 2020 or 2021. The 5270 lineup has released a few blue and white dials in the past 6 years. Many collectors have purchased those models, hence you see the soften prices out there for the G models. The 5270P pink face is very special, and history tells the P models usually outshine the gold models because they are made in lower quantities.

After trying on the 5270p this summer, I started having the same thoughts. It’s amazing. I just am not sure I am ready to commit to a $190k watch at the expense of nearly my entire collection, let alone the effort that would be involved in liquidating it . Also, I would prob want the 5270p from an AD so my name are on the papers.

sorry i am a bit slow here, why is it good/necessary/preferable to have your name on the certificate, which no one ever looks at?

It will allow you to have access to highly allocated items in the future. ie: a minute repeater. For me I am more comfortable being the owner of a new watch.

I’m all for having a new watch. Wife says no to preowned. And I don’t like other people’s dna. I once wore my friends 40th for a moment and it was disgusting full of sweat

So I get it

I would pick up the 5270P, keep the Nautilus + the Omega, and let go of everything else. The Omega Speedmaster is an everyday watch, the Nautilus is great for weekends + travel, and the grail 5270P is for...well anytime that you feel like it.

Agreed, I wouldn’t buy a used watch. Unless it’s an antique or old watch that’s 30+ years old.

Prefer new pieces if still in production but wouldn't spent and arm and a leg over grey just for buying from AD and having my name in the paperwork. Also I don't mind getting out-of-production pieces no matter how old they are...

Nautilus is a different story, cheapest w name on the certificate... Lol...

Should have told your buddy danestaff to clean the 40th w ultrasound before sharing it. A shower now and then helps too - I actually keep wearing my SS pieces when in the shower...

Does this watch fit you well. Hard to imagine a 15450 owner sporting one. I say this as a fellow 6.5er

From a mechanical and aesthetical viewpoint, the 5270p is almost at the apex. I say go for it. This watch won't be around forever.

I have thought about a similar scenario.. but in the end I decided will save a little longer and then consider buying Denovo... In the past when I sold a piece to make room as well as make it financially realistic -- I end up missing some of the pieces I have sold

The 5270p and your SS BLRO would be a perfect two watch combo. And if you can, keep one more of your liking to make three but trade for the P.
