Buying over the Internet???

Greetings,

I am considering buying a pre-owned Rolex and I'm wondering how the group feels about buying a watch over the Internet without first inspecting it. I'm talking about buying from a web-based watch business, not eBay or Craig's list.

Is this always a bad idea? Are there certain steps I should take, like verifying the serial number with Rolex? Should I ensure that the watch has been serviced recently by Rolex? Are there certain web sites you can recommend, or recommend against? I'm currently looking at watches from "thefinestwatches.com"

Thanks!

Buy the seller.

I'd recommend the for sale section here.

Good luck!

Welcome to TRF!!!

FWIW, I bought three watches from TRF sellers over the internet. One new, two used...but in awesome condition. Top sellers like DavidSW, LawrenceB and Oscar "BodyBump" are accurate in their descriptions and high res photos. If they were not accurate, folks would not wire them $$$ and get a watch over-nighted or two-day aired to them - over, and over and over again.

Scary at first, but after a successful transaction, you go back to these guys.

These guys and other TRF sellers are individual operators. You can try sites like bernardwatch, jomashop etc and use your credit card...but IMHO, the service & prices are better here. These folks rely on their reputations. If they did not do right by members, they would not sell too many watches.

Check out the names in the Buyers / Sellers who's who section and look at the praise and endorsements. You will see some names appear again and again.

yep... the sales section here (and at other sites) is the way to go...

ebay is not terrible... i like using the bids as a way to see what the 'going rate' is...

I bought my DeepSea from DavidSW and I could not be happier. Very very good communication and very reliable transaction. Was also worried about wiring that much money but I got the watch by Fedex and insured. I'd do it again for my next watch without a doubt. Definitely try the For-Sale section and there is a section on reputable members. If you don't see it you should then contact them and ask. Good Luck with your search.

There are of course other very reliable sellers on the net and we even have some right here on TRF , but DavidSW does take some beating !

my 2 cents... please allow me: for sure there is some good and fair guy out there... but i would never buy "online", paying in advance, trusting just a "Nickname"...
Ponzi's scheme actually start like this... Few happy ones... and millions of fuxxed ones disappointed!
Actually i don't want to take the risk of being the last link in the chain!...
Ciao Ciao!

I disagree,

Your few' happy ones' and 'millions of fluxxed ones' statement is when related to Ebay.

Most Ebay sellers are honest people and if you do your homework and use 'due diligence' you will bat 100.

I have purchased on Ebay and right here on the Forum and have been 100% happy with all my transactions because I did my homework

.

ps. FYI. I have not sold anything on Ebay to date.

Okay, it appears that the consensus is that TRF is a good place to buy. What about when no one on TRF is selling the watch you want? Where do most of you find your watch in that situation?

There is always the possibility to contact the sellers we have here via PM. They may be able to "look out" for the model you are after .
