For Greg (gmh1013) Ann's Chicken/Route 66

Greg, I got a couple of pics of Ann's Chicken Fry House and some other Route 66 landmarks for you!

'59 Cadillac still sits out front and glows neon pink at night.

Back behind Ann's:

Still operating as a motel... but not sure I'd stay there.

Kamp's grocery. The Kamp family still runs a top-notch butcher shop a bit north of here. This building is no longer a grocery, nor is the Kamp family still involved with it. I'm not sure what it is these days, but there wasn't much going on.

The proprietor, though, was very kind to offer to take our picture.

Remember The Golden Dome - Citizen's Bank? They were the only bank in town who would give Dad a loan to start up his dental practice in the 1950s.

Broadway, heading into downtown from the north. Devon tower does make an impression!

One of those would cost about 12 Falcons.

My 5 year old playing in the fountain by the new downtown library, just north of the Devon building.

Big view from the little fountain.

Old Pontiac building that still houses some amazing beauties. I would like to know whose collection this is.

Thanks, guys! We still have a bit of a cow-town reputation, but that's okay. We do still operate the largest cattle stocker-feeder market in the world.

Do you have the radio on KATT?
I still have a baseball jersey from them.....30 years old now.

I'll get some pics of VZD for you - it's only two blocks from home.

KATT - used to be up to the minute rock and roll - now it's classic rock. But the same songs, and probably still the same listeners.

Baseball jersey - the 89ers!

Broadway Extension will take you to Edmond - with many more lanes than it used to. Or you could take the Rt. 66 way - Kelley Avenue (where all the TV stations have their towers)

Yes, much is different, but happily some things are still the same.

I've got a hankerin' to go to Ann's now, but they only take cash and I don't have any!

Greg and Bill, here are a couple more pics. The pickup trucks for Bill and Kaiser's and VZD for Greg.

This truck sits right across from VZD near my house. The shop is where I take the Falcon for service.

A little further south, an icon I bet Greg will remember:

VZD is so obscured by trees you can barely see it. I'm sure at night it looks better with its neon lighting.

Kaisers Ice Cream, opened circa 1912. After many different hats, now it once again sells ice cream. Along with some pretty good food, at the original marble-and-tile counter.

Will Rogers Theater. Now a coffee shop/bar, with the old theater area available for weddings and dinners. They need to fix their neon!

A couple of our favorite restaurants in the Plaza area, near Kaiser's. One serves Italian food, the other Latin/Mexican. I like the architecture. One building was once a drug store and the other, I don't know!

The Plaza, home to Irma's Burgers, a Subway chain, and a brew house.

A mile or so east of here, a used car lot with another old truck in back. I don't know if it's for sale, but whoever owns it has a sense of humor. The guard dogs, however, did not.

Hi Lisa! I'm new to the forum, my name is Scott. You have a great collection of route 66 photos! I'll be heading to Tulsa next month for my 40th HS reunion and am seriously thinking about making a road trip instead of flying. I was thinking about heading down to New Mexico from western Colorado, where I live and picking up 66 into Oklahoma.
After seeing your photos... I've decided that a road trip is the way to go!!!
Thanks for posting these pics... and I agree with everyone else, you've got a sweet ride :))

Lisa love the pics! VZD's looks like it did 30 years ago.
I would love to drive around OK and see what it looks like since I have not been inthe state in over 25 years.
On the W-E do people still ride their motocycles around the lakes?
My ex-wife and I would ride around when the weather was good....I bought her a Suzuki GS250t and we rode around the state ....Her on the little 250 and I hade a 550......had a great time.....even with her being an ex now.
I would love to go back to VZD's to eat and have a few drinks....

We got some Icecream at Kaisers once I think....the main one we went to was Braums?
it was right down the street from our house.
Maybe one of these days I will make back to OKC and Stillwater.
You take great pics! if you get the time send some more.....love to see them

Hi, Scott. Welcome to the forum. Glad you like the Falcon - it's been lots of fun. I think a road trip sounds like a great way to get to your reunion, if you don't mind the hot weather. Oklahoma used to have more driveable miles of Rt. 66 than any other state, but it's been a while since I've heard that so don't know if its still true. Still, there's quite a bit of the old road you can travel.

Glad you liked the photos, Greg. Braum's is still selling good ice cream. Just went there last week, in fact.

Oh, yes - Lake Overholser and Lake Hefner see plenty of motorcycle traffic. Bicycles, too.

I'll try to get some pics of the inside of VZD... I might take the girls there for lunch and get some photos then.

Johny, those sound like terrific memories. About when was your trip here? A bus trip along Rt. 66 is classic!

Someday I would love to see the Grand Canyon.

So cool Lisa. Thanks for thinking of me.
That first truck is a 1954 (or 1955 first series) Chevy.
The second truck is just plain clever.

Great shots of an icon route and era... Reminds me of the tv series from the '60's.
Thanks, Lisa
