Question about value of Vintage PN Daytonas

Hi TRF,

I've been into watches for some time, but I'm not particularly versed in vintage Rolex knowledge and was just curious about Paul New Daytona's. Succinctly, what exactly made the PN's arguably the most valuable watches in the world, commanding astronomical prices? Was there a particular event that sparked the fire? Was Paul Newman really that substantial of figure in Rolex culture? Were they made in very small quantities?

Thanks and hoping to gain some to new knowledge!

They are exotic dials, that were not popular when first released. For every 1 exotic dial made there were 99 normal non exotic ones, if memory serves. Recent event that lit a fire can be located here.

marketing, hype, fashion

They are lovely watches

Not too rare but yes rarer than your bog standard Daytona

They were loved and hyped by the Italians in the late 80 s and just took of.
never to return to earth again

Prices are currently flying and will continue to due to recent auctions in the the offing
