Thoughts on red Sub dial
I’ve read and researched over the years about Red Sub dials and imperfections.
Am I still in the “right thought process” here? Case is very strong, history known with RSC paperwork, etc... But...dial has imperfections on the edge...small chip or peeling, that affects the black paint or hash marks...that isn’t very visible when wearing, or to the eye, (but they’re there).... Then this is acceptable? If you’re not looking for a safe queen/highly collectible Ex:....between the 57-59 markers visible when magnified in certain light/angles...but not really visible when looking through normal vision or wearing scenarios... Thoughts appreciated:) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I think that's a great looking MKIV 1680 RED. Nice patina and plenty of character. Excellent case, and bracelet, and a killer bezel insert. The slight imperfections at the edge of the dial are common (from servicing), and pretty minor. If price reflects this, I see no reason to pass it by, especially with RSC provenance.

Looks like a great MKIV red sub to me. Love the patina and stunning MKIII insert.

Hey Richard, I pretty much concur with Karl (Vincent65) and David (Frogman4me) on this one. Love the patina and insert. I know there is chipping but I would not let that bother me if the price is right. Good looking sub.

Overall a great-looking red 1680. The slight dial chip at the edge is indeed minor, but I would definitely use it as a bargaining point. If you ever decide to sell it, that could be an issue with some collectors. The case appears to be beautifully re-finished. Great crown guards.
Have you done a UV/blacklight test on the dial/hands lume? The tritium on the hour plots looks unevenly patina'd at some angles, but I assume it's just naturally aging like that. I see a couple of other marks maybe on the dial, but perhaps they're just on the crystal: a scratch just below the 11 o'clock hour marker, and what looks like a blemish to the right of the Rolex crown. If those are on the dial, they'd bug me. If they're on the crystal, non-issue, of course. Good luck! |

If it doesn't bother you and the price is right, go for it. Seen much worse chipping.
