Fun trying on Bintage subs for the first time

I am starting the hunt for a vintage diver and figured that I would check out a local jewelers shop that I know carries pre owned watches. I have never held a pre owned sub and until today had only checked out pictures here and on the usual dealers websites. I have to say it was cool trying on some of the pieces although I have no clue what I’m really looking for yet or what features make them more or less collectible.

Anyway on to a few pics! Feel free to let me know if something you see makes these jump out.

I really liked how this one looked a bit faded but it looks like between the markers, hands and pearl we have three different colors of lume

This one had some nice creamy patina but the dial was pretty spotted. I may have read this before that someone was describing this as “starry night sky” dial

Then a speedy from 1976 just for fun!

cool pieces.

I wouldnt put much weight on these terms that dealers have created - the spotting arguably is minor dial damage but somehow dealers have managed to sell it with a twist. You can tell as the edges of the dial appears to have small water damage. Make sure to have the movement checked to ensure no further moisture is present.

To be clear, the shop I was at didn’t try to sell it as night sky or anything like that. I had a great time talking about the watches with a salesperson that wasn’t their watch guy and he was really accommodating. The first one has some moisture damage around the edge as I can see on the higher res pics I took. The second one with the night sky (dammit now I’m calling it that) didn’t seem to be damaged at the edges just everywhere else and to be honest it didn’t look bad just oddly spotted.

Sorry - I mixed those pics up. You are right, two separate watches.

And good - don’t fall for those terms like others have here on the board.

Out of those the Speedy looks interesting. Those telemeter inserts are uncommon although it looks like the seconds hand has it's lume missing but fairly easily replaced ...........but I don't think you are really looking to get a Speedy

I agree with other replies & think the Speedy looks the most interesting out of the three . To me the first 16800 looks ok but I think the hands have been replaced with either newer service or luminova hands ( they should be tritium ) , which is no deal breaker but its all added cost to replace unless its a great price & there is some water damage to the dial ,which again is additional cost should you want to replace it. The second 16800 is a later version with white gold surrounds & not as valuable as the 16800 Matte dials , but I wouldn't touch this one given the dial condition .

I agree with u and I love the way you clinch it :D

When will the damaged Dial renaming stop?

first one is ok
second one has a damaged dial
Speedy it's wonderful (I'd take this one, you'd have to relume the second chrono hand)

So on this speedy, the second hand just list it’s lume? It’s completely see through and it’s not supposed to be like that? That is definitely a service bezel, could that be a service second hand?
