Very cool

Why is the oscillator freq 4 Hz? I thought it was 8 beats per seconds (Hz)

Or is it two beats per oscillation and so 4 Hz?

Exactly.. 1 Hz is a complete oscillation, so 2 beats (ticks), one on each side of the oscillator (hairspring) swing...

I like it, but:
1. The hands appear just a little bit short, particularly the hour hand, and
2. The numerals need lume, as the 1016 had. That one is a disappointment.

However, the overall effect is wonderful, I really find myself coming back to it!!!

Its sharp looking, but tend to agree with SSD/Jamie, tho the hands dont bother me, I think the numbers should be lumed.

So, you mean 2 beats complete a cycle (one herzt) like "Tick" then "Tock" !

The lume on the hands would be nice but it would comprimise the SS hands by covering them with lume which I think would change the look of the dial too much... IMHO anyways!

I guess they're just using the same hands from the 36mm model. The watch looks nice, but I like the 36mm better...

It it only had a date....I would live it to have the 6 and 9 as it does maybe even a 12 but with a date and I would already have one on order....Other than that I think it looks GREAT

Yep, the hands give the watch a strange look. Like many things in life, right idea, wrong execution. Now I'm really glad I went with the Omega 39.2mm Railmaster, lots of lume and proper sized hands.

Indeed - the Railmaster is a superbly crafted watch, as is the even better value MKII Vantage. I must confess that the hands on the new, more expansive Explorer do not detract from its aesthetic appeal, as far as I'm concerned. Like wanasub, I'm keen to see this one in the flesh.

Ever since Kyle has been displaying his superb photographs of his Explorer, and I'm sure I'm not alone, my appreciation of this model has grown. 36mm, however is just too small for me, so I was delighted to hear that there Basel saw the release of this larger model. It's my favourite Rolex from this year's show.

Interesting how they moved the name "EXPLORER" to the 6 o'clock position under the axis.

Does the 36 mm Explorer coexist with the new 39 mm Explorer?

Just wondering if we have 2 versions of Explorer 1 co-existing.

The South Coast Plaza Rolex store said they should be getting the new Explorer in just a few weeks.

Around what time frame did the numbers have lume? Any particular Serials?

I would like a white dialed version of this model together with some lume.
