My GMT 16700 - Real Bezel vs Chemically Faded
Had it for a few weeks now and I can't decide if I like my 5513 more or the 16700.
Hope you enjoy! Hey and a Sub shot. And here are a couple with an aftermarket artificially faded pepsi. I much prefer the real fade on the real rolex bezel, the chemical fades look extremely artificial. Mmmm Lug Holes! |

I liked the bezel more before, and Ive got a few faded bezels. No need to like one more than the other, love them both the same. They are both great. Congrats

The Sub is great, but that 16700 is the mad notes---that faded bezel is PERFECT on it, suggests a well-used travel instrument (which it surely is/was), and the tritium has just a touch of patina that adds to the charm of it. Also refreshing to see the simple Oyster clasp on that watch.
Big thumbs up! |

Yup, the previous owner used bleach or drain cleaner to chemically fade one of the inserts he sent with the watch.
Personally I prefer the natural fade. |

Love that faded bezel look chemical or not. It works so well on the GMT.

Some you claim to be "chemically faded" aftermarket inserts look like the real deal to me. I'm glad this sort of thing isn't in the vintage section just yet!

I love my 16700 with the old style date wheel fonts with open 6 and 9's. It has a standard spot next to my 1680 and 16800. Nice watch though go real faded if you choose that route. I didn't and prefer my gmt to have an unfaded insert.

Great pictures. Bravo.
I happen to have also a 16700 and a 5513. I love both, wear them in rotation, and enjoy their looks a lot ! I have also faded bezels, and a lot of pictures. Here is just a couple so I do not make the thread heavy, not to mention that my picts DO NOT COMPARE in quality with yours !!

Your 16700 and 5513 are gorgeous. I love the gloss dial with white gold markers with the plexi on the 5513, so nice.
But you're right, artificially faded inserts look weird, you should get some naturally faded ones, it would enhance the look a lot. |

Yea I'm liking the faded look. Really adds to the appeal of the watch in my opinion. Looks like it has weathered the storms.

16700
Completely agree. I almost purchased a 16700. I like the quickset date feature on it versus the 16710. Great watches gentlemen... I ended trading in my GMT for another Sub, as I have the Submariner disease that just won't leave me...

Nice photos. The chemically faded look is definitely interesting. Nice to have options and choose what suits your mood and or attire.

Thanks, they're definitely distinct.
To me, because of the uneven fading and the fading from the inside border out it just doesn't look real to me but maybe I'm mistaken. |

Question: How do they "chemically fade" the bezel?
I have a background in chemistry and if i were to artificially age a bezel i would place it in a QSun and hit it with UV light for a week or two checking it every 48 hours |
