"Hairspring" Watch timing app

Just downloaded the Hairspring app from the iTunes Store, I'm quite impressed with how accurate it is for a £4 app it measured my GMT at +1.1 secs/day I know it is currently running at +1s/d as it was checked at my local AD last weekend.
I know it doesn't replace a proper timing machine but for a quick check it isn't bad. And it can save each test done so you can keep an eye on your watches inner health.
Anyone else had experience of using it and is there any similar apps that you use.

As a side note I did research the effects of magnetising my watch, and while the chances are slim I have also obtained a demagnetiser just in case.

I've enjoyed Hairspring with many different mechanical watches. I've found if you use the white headset that comes with iPhone, and set the piece down so it traps the mic underneath, sometimes you can get a reading without popping the caseback.

Yeah. I found a really quiet room helped and genuine iPhone headphones.
I didn't have to take back off at all.
The only watch a had a problem with was my 1000m sun diver I think the case back is really thick so it stops the sound passing through, I'd imagine the deepsea would be similar.

Beware that you can magnetize your watch by placing it close to a microphone.
There is often a magnet in there as well as the magnetic field generated by coils of wire.

I was also concerned about magnetising the watch and even went to the expense of buying a de-magnetiser, but so far watch has not been affected, it may be due to my watch being a newer model with the parachrome spring or the magnet in the mic being so small and has no effect, time will tell ( sorry for pun ).
If anything changes in the future I'll report back but so far I'm really pleased with app, my watch is still showing an average of +0.5 secs a day.

I've used Hairspring and two others (the apps currently escape me) I deleted the other two due to Hairspring being simple to use and seemed to be more consistent. It measured my 16710 at -2.9 seconds on avg over the past year. I haven't even bothered testing my SubC bc it's new but eventually I'll get around to it.

Not bad for $5.

Hairspring is two years old and probably still 32bit. When iOS updates to version 11, all apps will have to be 64 bit. The three app is use is Lepsi, and Watch Tuner Timegrapher using various microphones, and Watch Tracker for daily monitoring without a microphone.

It’s a cool little app for the price for sure but I want to second the warning about magnetizing the hairspring if you use it by putting the phone’s microphone in contact or very close to the watch. It happened to me!

Using a separate microphone like the one on a headset is fine though (and easier to get a good reading with than trying to hold your phone to the caseback.

If you have watches with a hairspring that can be magnetized, you should own a de-magnetizer anyways, they are so cheap, and most of us leave in a world with a lot of magnetic fields

No magnet in the iPhone headset?

There may be one, but it’s very low power. However putting your phone directly on the watch will eventually cause magnetization (unless your watch has an antimagnetic hairspring), I know this first hand :). Not too much risk anyways: if your watch starts running at +25 s/day buy one of those super cheap de-magnetizers from EBay or Amazon and 10 seconds later you will be all good again :)

I use Swiss Connect Analytics. Very good set of data other than just time.

Why? A demagnetizer is such a super-simple device there is no reason for it to be expensive, and mine certainly de-magnetized my watch and whatever else I tried it with...

(Talking about the ones you plug into the electrical socket and have a single button)

We’ve tested the before/after with the Horotec tool. We have seen increase magnetism from cheapos. Seriously we’re not idiots. When we invest in quality Swiss tools it’s not for vanity.
