6263 big red

Hello everyone, I would really like to get your opinions on this silver dial 6263 big red that I'm considering to purchase. It comes as watch only. And is a 5m serial. I will greatly appreciate any advice/opinions that you can give me. Thank you!

Looks nice. Yes, it's been polished, but not many 40-year-old Rolexes haven't. I actually think the case looks decent. It's also got a service crystal and replaced pushers, neither of which is a big deal. The tritium lume plots look like they're mostly intact and the patina matches the hands, which is great. Have you seen photos of the movement?

As for the service bezel, that's also not really a big deal on a 6263, unlike on a vintage Sub, in part because they’re so similar (no fat vs. thin fonts; no mismatched lumi pearl), and when original Daytona bezels go bad with age with that milky blotchy look, they’re very ugly. There are no cool faded Daytona inserts like on vintage Subs. Also, I've read horror stories about very good fake MK1-3 Daytona bezels. The one bezel that's not faked by the bad guys: a service bezel.

As we all know, perfect (or near-perfect) all-original and unpolished examples of 6263s are insanely expensive nowadays, like the price of a nice house. So it would come down to what you're looking for and the price.

If you want an honest, wearable and very cool vintage Daytona, I'd have no problem with these types of examples. If you're looking for a perfect, all-original 6263 that you'd stick in a safe, this isn't the watch for you.

Thanks, guys! Just waiting to see if the buyer pulled the trigger. I heard through the grapevine that the above listed Daytona had a price tag of $87K.

Thank you so much for your great advice and opinion above!

I have decided not to pull the trigger on the watch for now.

I'm not a vintage guy, but do love four digit Daytonas. I learned a lot from this post, thanks!
