1680 Red Submariner

Hello TRF,

I’ve been on the hunt for a red submariner. Found one being sold locally, no box or papers. Looks good to me but I’m no expert in vintage pieces. What does TRF think about this piece? Thanks in advance

my take

I am absolutely not an expert but I am looking for one too - from what I see, ft first with closed 6 should be a mark VI dial.
If you look compare to this dial there are a few differences:
- the "m" of 200m should start right below the R of Submariner
- the "F" of Ft is super close from the Submariner writting
- "officialy" starts below the "E"
- etc.

I used the DRSD great website -

Disclaimer :), I might be wrong has I am starting to do my own research!

-Looks like the top “oyster perpetual date” doesn’t line up properly
-the red “Submariner” font looks off
-The “superlative chronometer” not lined up properly
This assuming it’s a Mark VI dial

Check this website...DRSD.COM

Hi
At first glance I thought this was fine... BUT it’s not.
The MK 6 dial is the only ft first with closed 6’s. I’ve compared it to my MK6 and the SUBMARINER font is wrong, the U, the R’s. On mine and other MK6 examples the S of SUBMARINER lines up over the first 6 and not between the 6’s as your example.
It’s getting scary out there.....!

Yes, assuming MK VI, definitely fake. Is it possible to get a closer pic of the 66? A pic of the inside case back, and serial number would be good too. I'm new at this too, but just checked the MK VI dial on DRSD and it's not even close. Good thing you checked here first, those fake dials are very scary, and can easily fool someone.

firstly to me the case did not look right - also the date wheel - so I did not bother looking at the other details ... check the serial and close up photos of it

the dial looks like either aftermarket or a 5512/3 printed with the red parts on top - the riveted bracelet looks aftermarket too - though incorrect for this period it should be a folded one

a bit of a franken one this one which if it does have 5512/5513 parts in it would have had more value leaving as is...

I have a MK5 unpolished with box and punched paper. Comes on original 9315 bracelet and ghost bezel. Beautiful patina as well. I am in Los Angeles. Let me know if you are interested.
