Big Eye

New to me Longines Big Eye. I’ve been looking for a Breguet Type XX and started reading up on this one. Same dial out and arguably less cluttered. Fantastic dial and case with. Column wheel movement. What’s not to like!?

I’m about 6.5” and flat. The watch is 41mm and the lug to lug is reasonable. Like my Speedy, it looks great on ANY strap. You can find used for under $2k. Great value for a solid column wheel movement.

Wish it was a manual wind. But for some reason then it would probably be 51mm.

When this watch was first released, it was advertised as having a 54H power reserve. Now, the Longines website says 66 hour for both the titanium version and the original black dial version.

Any idea if this was due to more testing or a physical change to the movement? Anyone test their power reserve for this one yet and if so, how many hours?

I love this watch and am about to buy one, but how cool would it be a bit thinner and with a manual wind version of the movement?

Not sure why the change in power reserve. I did pick up a new one on sale from Navy Exchange recently after stupidly flipping the one in my original post. I’ll need to test it.

I just can't unsee that subdial/register at 3 o'clock. If it were subdued and similar to the others, I'd probably have a greater interest in this model.

This is a great looking and relatively affordable reference, especially compared to other brands with similar aviation watches like Breguet. I prefer the black dial to the newer blue dial. Longines’ Heritage Division did a masterful job of reproducing this piece spot on from the original Longines BigEye. And, yes, the 3 o’clock subdial is larger. Hence the name BigEye.

If you’re a stickler for symmetry, I can see how that can throw you off. However, some of the Type XX spec’d watches from that era had this unique look. It’s not something that Longines threw in casually - it’s historically accurate.

In fact, the oversized chronograph minute counter is one of the things that sets this apart from the herd of illegible chronographs (think Daytona, Royal Oak et al). The Second Generation Vacheron Overseas Chronograph shared this feature and was, similarly, under appreciated because few people enjoy practical chronos.

I think it is wonderful and gives the watch a more playful tone. Currently trying to decide between this or a laco handwound 42MM flieger.
