Vintage Rolex/Vintage Heuer?

Sorry if this is out of place here....just curious how many vintage Rolex collectors also collect vintage Heuer, or other brands for that matter.
I like Heuer a lot as it is still somewhat reasonably priced. Also, they have a strong history in the auto racing industry, and I like cars as well.

Other high-end watch brands with strong horological history should be a part of any extensive vintage watch collection IMHO.
I have several including an Omega cal 321 chronograph, Bulova Accutron, Longines Ultra-Chron and Breitling Three Register Chronographs. Here is a pic of one of my favorites...a vintage Breitling "Big Case" (48mm) Chronomat ca. 1967 with a Venus 178 under the hood in absolute NOS condition.

I say collect what you like. What is good for you, isn't good for someone else.

I too like Heuer and their connection to racing. Like you said, they're for the most part, reasonably priced compared to many vintage Rolex's. I'd say go for it.

@Sublovin
You'll meet collectors who concentrate on one brand while others acquire a whole (brand) range. Obviously there's no right or wrong. Personally I love vintage Heuer.

Heuer has some good stuff.

I have the original Monnin and the TAG Heuer Spirotechnique models - both I think have strong history and reminds me the Rolex subs

Rolex 6239 “small Daytona” and Heuer 3646 second execution. I love them both but have to say the Heuer is pretty darn “cool”!

I have both vintage Rolex and Heuer.
However I feel Heuer prices are not reasonable at this time.
I can remember a few years ago, when I couldn't sell a pair of Viceroy Autavias for $800 each. Now they are selling for $3k to $4k. It seems a little frothy to me.
I think Breitling is a better value at this time.
And their are several chronographs that share the caliber 11 movement with Heuer that I think are more interesting, like the Bulova "parking meter" and the Hamilton Fontainebleau

Good points...prices are definitely up, but still don’t seem as unreasonable as say a $25,000 Zenith Daytona

Yes, but imo not anywhere near the same quality. And, much more common.
Cripes, the Viceroy Autavia was a giveaway for cigarettes.

Agreed, and it’s about 1/10 the price. I think it’s easily 1/10 the quality but that’s opinion. Also, to be clear, it was never given away with cigarettes. It was sold as a discount through the promotion.
Zenith Daytona could be had for $8,000 all day about 24 months ago. It has all gotten a little bit silly now hasn’t it ?

But when we think of rarity I think screw back case Autavia models are probably a rarer creature than a Daytona of the era. I don’t know about a quality comparison. Most of the 60’s chronographs come across as similar quality. Looking at the Daytona, the movement is Valjoux, the case was made by Spillman, the dial maybe by Singer and the plexi is a 10 cent piece of plastic from a polymer factory! It’s all done to a good standard of course to the Rolex specification but it’s hardly hand finished with love and artistry.

I agree with this, and honestly the viceroy Autavia example that was used, in my opinion, is far rarer than a many Daytona for a small fraction of the price. I trust my eyes...look at how many are for sale at any given time. Not to mention the racing heritage and history!

There is always the iconic Tudor "Big Block" three register chronograph with Valjoux movements and plenty of Rolex DNA (Rolex Hallmarked casebacks and crowns). Some like to refer to them as "Daytonas with a date" that might be a bit of a stretch but fine watches nonetheless. I have three that are all full sets that get periodic wrist time and I enjoy very much. Mine are 94210 silver dial, 79170 black dial and 79180 "Albino".

Beautiful eggshell finish on the dial of my early Carrera, just as interesting as exotic dial Daytonas and look at those lugs, Heuer did great lugs.

Can’t comment on quality but they can be as rare and many I find very enjoyable. I traded a Heuer Autavia GMT when I got my 6264 Big Red a couple of years ago. I still miss it but the price has pretty much tripled from what I paid. Bought the new 02 re-edition and I find these very nice. Wish they were 40mm though. Agree that collecting all the other classic watch brands helps keep things interesting as well as broadening my vintage knowledge in general.

The new Autavia is really well done, and quite a value for in-house movement Chronograph.

I really love these.

I'd like to ad a Heuer to my collection at some point, preferably a 1553n Carrera , but there's other watches I'd probably purchase first.

Of all the watch brands I collect, Heuer is probably my favorite. There's no denying the build quality and timelessness of Rolex, but (in my opinion) Heuer's connection to the golden age of racing is far more concrete than other brands. That aside, I find the 2447 Carrera to be the most perfect sports chronograph of the 1960s. And before that gets a ton of blowback, I own a 6239 as well. The 6239 is gorgeous, but the Carrera's total package (the unique angular lugs, beautiful dials that have more room to "breathe" thanks to the inner tension ring that marks minutes, and a Valjoux 72) make it the perfect watch to me.

Some might disagree the closest thing that resemble the looks of the carrera seems to be the zenith chronograph. Those lugs and dial.

Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Longines, Heuer. the odd UG pass through. If it speaks to you that's what matters.

I’ve gotten into some Omegas and UG, here are some of the cooler ones I’ve found:

For a preowned vintage, I suggest Rolex due to its durability and its reliability. I don’t recommend vintage Chronograph , the water resistance is poor and servicing is way costly.
