What would you do...

Hey everyone!

Has any impulse buyer over here regretted purchasing a watch a few days or week later and now in a position to want to sell it to purchase something else?
What will your AD think? What to do?!

Yep. Bought a Submariner 116613 LB. Stunning watch but just wasn’t me. Sold it back to my AD two months later and bought a GMT 116710 instead.

It was tough to swallow the financial hit, but the reality was that I’d taken the hit the moment I’d left the shop, just because it doesn’t feel real until you sell it, doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened!

Be bold, make the decision you need to make, and get on with it!

I bought a 5524 earlier this year and didn’t bond with it. My AD sold it for me, plus I took a loss on it so my AD knows it wasn’t bought to flip. So no issues with the AD or Patek.

If you buy and trade enough you will have the, "I thought I wanted it but it does not work", situation. I guess that I have taken this to the next level with my purchases/trades. I am already figuring the loss/gain should this happen when I get a watch. If you are paying retail or more for a watch get ready. You do not actualize a loss until the watch is moved but if it does not work why keep it when the chance to get a watch that does work is available. Look at Chrono24, Trusted Seller web sites and even eBay to get a feel for what the value of your watch is. Remember those are asking not getting prices. This should give you a feel for what the market holds. Take 10-20% off that figure and that is where you are. Find a dealer that has the watch you want and see what can be worked out. I have lost money on watches before and I have made money. In this game, if you do it long enough, you will be on both sides of the fence.

Yeah i ended going back to my AD,... and traded up for full MSRP. It was a rolex and not a patek tho.

And this was at tourneu earlier this year after wearing the watch for 3-4 months :)

It happens, sell it. Who cares what the AD thinks it's your watch.

If it is a hot model and you are selling it for a profit then you need to be careful, ADs are looking to trim their lists and labelling you a flipper is easy for them.

If I sold it to a grey dealer I’d break even. If I’m lucky I’d make 1K. If I sold it to an AD I’d lose my pants. I always thought I wanted it until I bought it....

Yes, I've made an impulse purchase which I regretted. I think you should sell to grey and break even.

It gets harder and harder to actually try pieces on more than once in person these days. See it and don’t buy it, it’s gone and may not be back again.

Been there, done that.

I have to live with the watch for some time if it is truly for me or not... this means that some times you’ll make a mistake and you will loose money. But as someone here wrote: with certain models, once you are walking out of the store, you already lost your money....
Who cares, what the AD thinks—it’s your wrist&your money...
The sooner you’ll realise that the watch isn’t for you, the better.

Not sure if buying Pateks qualify as a simple or impulse purchase. Usually if someone is interested in a particular watch and is willing to wait months if not years for it, it means the watch must be something special. One needs to do their due diligence so you know that particular model is the one for you. Imagine if there are many ppl doing the same thing, the secondary market would be inundated with used Patek watches! Take a look at the following auction:

https://www.phillips.com/detail/PATE...E/CH080218/131

The buyer of the watch waited on a list years to purchase it and was granted an allocation this past July. In less than 3 months, the watch is now up for auction!! This is someone clearly not interested in cherishing their relationship with the AD and to flip the most difficult watch to purchase in 3 months time is either insane or probably has no interest in future Patek purchases...

All I can say is...Patek and their clients are all about relationships. To buy a watch and decide it's not for you after weeks or months...then I don't think you should be buying Pateks. Maybe a Rolex or even an Omega is a better fit..

There are some RMs that outperform on the market so if this only breaks even then you should be free to sell without recrimination.

Fail and move on. A watch that I got relatively recently literally kept bringing me bad luck so I dumped it.

If i regretted a purchase right after and I had the opportunity to break even, that sounds like a win win to me. Good Luck!

I’ve had to cut my losses on more than one watch. If I’m not feeling it, I move it...

I’ve never regretted a single purchase. I’ve enjoyed all of my watches.

My AD (who I’ve known for many many years) honestly couldn’t care less what I do with my watches....not that I do much more with them than wear them.

I’ve bought watches that didn’t sing to me and traded watches I’ve regretted ever since
