Incoming! First Panerai - I’m in Love...

What a fabulous watch. Wish I got into Panerai earlier. Pre-owned but looks brand new and unworn. Stickers and tag was still in place.

I already smell a 47mm coming.

Thanks again guys for the advice and thank you DavidSW for yet another flawless transaction!

Congrats. Excellent taste. I saw David had one. I don’t see many 104’s for sale at most of our trusted sellers. Get ready for the strap sickness to set in. I must have 17 so far for my Pam. Let me know if you want any strap ideas.

Love mine.

I’m very happy with the 104.

Big congrats and good taste . My gf wears the 104 often. She’s an world class interior architect and super picky of what she’ll wear on her wrist.

The more I look at this watch the more I realize that I've been on some other planet when it comes to watches. For so many years I just passed over Panerai because I thought well... they are outside of my little box here in San Francisco and couldn't pull one off.

I've had my share of watches, all sort of styles and sizes, but nothing really over 42mm.

Panerai's are on a very unique level and I just get it now.

I think even Archie at some point admitted that Panerai's are a great watch.

Now I just need to temper the desire to get more of them!

I'll start with straps and see where it goes.

As for the 104, I absolutely LOVE the sausage dial (although I do desire the sandwich too!), but one of the features I love most, is the cyclops. Not sure if any of you folks out there were into Leica's... but the cyclops is almost identical to shape and symmetry of the film counter on the early M series cameras. I just love that uniqueness, symmetry and style. It's spot on and perfect IMO.

PS, as for the ETA movement, who cares. Outside of my Rolex watches I personally don't care. Now, if I owned a Patek, maybe I would harp. But really... outside of the rotor behavior and that wobble when I'm flicking my wrist which is typical of any large ETA watch I've owned, when it's doing its thing... it is STILL damned nice watch.

^ great post! Panerai is a superb complement to Rolex. Have fun, enjoy this first one for a bit, get some straps (Micah, GSD, Simona) and then think of the next one.... many from which to choose.

I’m enjoying my inverted cyclops today, too. :-)

Very nice! Congrats

As for the movement, it is basically a Valjoux 7750 with the chronograph mechanism removed, that is a super solid movement capable of good accuracy and long service intervals. I'd much rather have that than in-house because it is so durable.

Yes, completely agree.

I used to get all caught up on the whole ETA vs in-house movement obsession but I do love the reliability of this ETA and know it can get serviced pretty much anywhere anytime.

Now, what is concerning me the most, is a newly formed obsession on straps!!

I have my eye on a custom (stunning) mustard horn back and (fun) light blue croc... And the orange Panerai rubber. Hmmm... my wife will surely notice.

Tempted to give Panerai a shot due to all the Rolex nonsense. Don’t know if my 6.5 in wrists could pull it off tho

6.5 should be fine. Definitely go try them on :) I find that the hand wound movement with a thinner case wears better for me. Tried the 312 and it sits too high compared to my current 233. I have a 6.75” wrist btw. The new 312 which is 1312 is thinner than the 312. I can’t comment on the 1312 yet.

I think a 44mm would be fine. The watch photographs much larger than it looks and feels in real life. I’m now confident I can pull off a 47mm.

I’m not planning to buy another Rolex until the nonsense ends. I’d rather get an AP at this point. It’s insanity what’s going on and we all know in most cases some of the values are very, very frothy.

Panerai is everybit addictive as Rolex. It has a stylish artistic flair that no other watch represents in such a distinctive way. Panerai is Panerai.
I love the Panerai rotor wobble. It’s extremely smooth and makes the watch feel alive with a heart beat. The OPIII movement is rock solid and very accurate. Mine has kept under +2 seconds a day for the last 4 years. I also sleep well at night knowing Rikki can easily service it with parts readily available.

Definitely considering other brands. Seems like I will have to go to try on a Panerai!! Love the look size was just the only thing I was hesitant about.

When my son saw the watch for the first time (he's 9), he started asking questions about it because it wasn't the typical style watch he's seen before. When I told him it was an Italian design he threw his arms up into the air and said "Figures, Italian's know how to make things so stylish and pleasing to the eye." He's a smart little bugger.

Great pic!

Agree with the Rikki call-out.

Speaking of sleeping, I can’t sleep with a Rolex on because of that distinctive hum. It’s not a pleasing one. Anyway, took a nap yesterday and was happy that I can put my hand/arm tucked under the pillow and hear nothing. Also, I just love how smooth the movement truly is. It’s hard to explain.
