Once upon a time..

This was 2 years ago at an AD in Cali. Drives insane that I hadn’t picked both up!

Yup...good old days. Walked into an AD a few years ago and they had a blue 5711 on display.

As someone who’s only been collecting for just over a year I assume the above is all a joke?? The idea that a Patek dealer would have an in demand Patek in stock seems completely ridiculous! Haha
Think am a bit late to this game unfortunately

The 5980/1a was never in demand when it was in production. Even when discontinued demand still was not great - its only in the last couple of years that the price has been appreciating. Back in 2016 there probably were 1 or 2 still to be found. This time last year Watchfinder were selling for about low £42k, they now have one for £65k, so it really is only fairly recently demand has picked up.

I can empathise with you - same for me could have picked up both pieces at list about 3 years ago - the benefit of hindsight!

Absolutely agree. I remember visiting an AD several years ago and seeing all 3 dial variants of the 5980/1A and I tried them all to compare. They were actually selling for a discount at the time. Only within the past year with the Nautilus frenzy have prices gone up for these watches.

This is so true. Good for the calatrava lovers.

But I sold my calatrava and changed to nautilus and aquanaut. I think I just prefer the nautilus design more

On the matter of regrets

A few years back, while traveling I wandered into an AD that was losing its Patek line. You guessed it, they had a blue 5711 and offered me 20% off! I had just bought several watches from my usual AD and passed, thinking I could always get a nautilus. Always regretted that one.

I picked-up my 5980/1A back in 2014. I can't believe how they have appreciated in value.I have had a couple of offers to buy it, but I'm a collector and not a seller. Maybe one day.
