Hello - to members of the Rolex Forum
I just found this fantastic Forum accidentally after searching for the factory address of Rolex in order to try and find the exact date of manufacture of my Rolex Precision which I inherited from my Father. I have just had it serviced by a really great watchmaker in Carson City. This is a classic dress watch and looks like what I have always thought of when I think of Rolex.
I have noted that the factory address is shown in the Forum and I will try and contact them because the internet gives two conflicting schedules of the dates for the manufacture of early Rolex watches. The serial number of my watch is 95905 and it was made either in 1936/37 or 1939/40, depending on which list of dates one looks at. Any help on establishing the date by experienced Rolex lovers in the Forum will be much appreciated. Stuart |

Stuart,
I would go with the second dating since I believe that corresponds to the James Dowling book "Best of Times" about the Rolex watch.. Keep in mind that the serial number on a watch only dates the case at when it was stamped.. It may have taken a while to actually put a movement into that case, and further it might have take quite some time on the shelf before it was sold. For an item that old, without a paper trail you are pretty much in the dark.....Unless you send a letter to Rolex who might look up the serial number and tell you when it was first sent out to a Dealer, ant possibly the first date that the dealer actually sold it.. Good luck on this noble quest.. |

Hi Stuart, welcome to TRF!
You may want to try posting photos along with your questions over on the Rolex page. I'm not sure all the experts come over this way as often as they do there. In any case, I'm sure you'll have all your questions answered eventually. Glad to have you on board!

Dating a Rolex Precision
The welcome you give to new members of the Forum is very warm and friendly. Many thanks for your welcome.
Attached are some photos of the Rolex Precision. You will note that the serial number is stamped on the movement (in the top left hand corner of the photo) and not on the case. The case has "hallmarks". The assay office mark comprises two "F's" vertically, one facing up and the other facing down (not very clear), and the date letter appears to be a "C". These marks would date the case and not necessarily the watch movement. As "Tools" has noted the more reliable date sequence for serial number 95905 would appear to be from the James Downing book, somewhere between 1939 and 1940. It is strange that various places on the internet show a different date sequence. Again, many thanks for your welcome and your replies. Any additional information that anyone can provide will be much appreciated. Stuart ----------------------------------------- Quote:
