Needing help with a new watch

I became intersted in watches a few years ago. Only bought ones that were $200 and under. Been saving for a couple years now to finally buy my first big boy watch. An opportunity came up for a Rolex watch that i was wondering if its to good to be true. Just worried about fakes and everything. Its a Oyster Perpetual Date. If i posted pics could anyone look at them and give me their opinion?

My recommendation is....BUY THE SELLER.

If it's too good to be true, then it's most likely a fake. You should bring it to a Rolex AD and have them authenticated. Spend the extra money to make sure you're buying a 100% authentic watch.

Even if you post pictures, it's still not 100%. You'll need to open up the watch, etc..

Buy from a trusted seller when buying online. There are a few sellers that have stores or have hundreds or thousands of transactions. DO NOT WIRE MONEY TO STRANGERS. Post pics when you can and the group will give you their opinion. As others stated, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

Make sure the seller is trusted either by recommendation to you, is know as a trusted seller, is a trusted seller here.

Dominic Hackett watches

All well known and trusted sellers I would buy from (in the uk)

Then there are very well know trusted sellers on this forum.

Put your money into someone who sources good quality watches and knows how to spot fakes or Frankenstein watches


Ps not meaning to sound harsh but friend of a friend is 1 link away from no hassle. It’s your hard earned money, I would be more careful about where you put it. Especially if it’s taken that long to save it. Take your time and don’t buy the cheapest. People aren’t stupid when it comes to pricing and selling a Rolex.

Are fakes easy to spot?

Ask to meet at a Rolex dealer and have it authenticated before purchasing. Even if you have to pay for the authentication, it's better than buying a fake.
If the seller is hesitant to meet at a dealer, that's also a good sign it's not real.

The first photo of the watch on the suede tuft pillow looks legit.
For some reason, the last three photos look like a different watch, and definitely not as good.

Is it just me?

What we're trying to tell you is that if you have to ask us whether it's fake or not, then you shouldn't be doing business with that seller.

And yes, if something is too good to be true, it usually is. Good luck,

) Use the marketplace here on TRF

) Find a “trusted seller” with the watch you want

) Buy with confidence

) Post plenty of photos of your first Rolex !

In your original post you called it an Oyster Perpetual Date. While it says that on the dial, this watch is actually called a GMT Master II. This is a very popular model and because of that, very good fakes exist. I’ve handled a lot of Rolex watches and some of the fakes I’ve seen on YouTube look so close that I’m not sure i’d be able to tell.

For someone in your position who doesn’t have a lot of experience with Rolex watches, there’s no way you’re going to be able to tell for sure. You’ve saved for a long time... don’t risk all that money on a deal where you might get burned. It’s even possible that the person selling it may not know it’s a fake.

Go to your nearest Rolex jeweler. Try on some watches, look through the catalog, and ask to be placed on their list for the watch you want. Today, sports models like that GMT Master are selling for near or above retail even when they’re preowned due to a shortage. So you might as well try to get one new at MSRP and be confident in what you’re getting.

No, you are 100% correct. Stay clear OP. Someone is trying to scam you.

Pics 2,3 & 4 are of a (bad) $40 fake.

There are so many tells in this picture its an easy spot if you know what to look for

Thanks for all the help. I decided to pass. I asked 3 times for a picture of the numbers between the lugs and i have yet to receive it. Guess ill keep saving ! Thanks for all the advice
