Ouch sorry about it! I usually travel with a Seiko which looks almost as good as my Rolex yet is easily replaceable.

It doesn't matter if you put it in a safe or hide it. The thugs are going to get it one way or another, even with extreme mean with physical violence or use of weapon. I could have been worse for OP if they didn't find the watch.

I'm stunned reading this. Just feels weird and messed up.
Especially if someone simply enters your room, you asleep and not waking up. Eerie feeling to say the least. The hotel has to be responsible if someone breaks in into your room. |

OMG. Really sorry for you Jay. Hope you add another one soon.
Only time I sleep with my watch is when I travel, because I worry about that scenario. Wife always said I was being paranoid. I just told her about this thread and she couldn't believe it especially in Vienna. I guess I was right. Really scary. |

Man, that's awful. But as other's have mentioned, you can count your blessings. It really can be replaced, and at least you weren't threatened with deadly force. That would be a meaningless way to end up in a hospital or worse. Just believe in karma. The universe has a way of making things right.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but you should post the serial number. In fact, I'm new to TRF but is there a thread dedicated to serial numbers of stolen pieces? That would make a search easier. Sorry for the bad news, but it really could have been worse. |

Sorry for your loss.
In a previous thread I mentioned I never take my Rolex on trips because of the risk of someone grabbing it at the end of the x-ray conveyor belt. This is another reason I need to keep my trusty Swatch Irony day date world traveler. It's been to Egypt, Morocco, Istanbul, Switzerland and Norway. My other watches take a vacation in the bank safety deposit box. I lost some cash out of my hotel room in Switzerland a few years back. A sizable majority of hotel service staff in Europe come from Eastern Europe such as Romania, Bulgaria, etc. They are also the best pickpockets. |

What hotel? If you don't want to say, was it part of a major chain or just a local property?

Sorry for your loss, why no insurance? it is so cheap, at least in the US.
I always wear my watch to bed, makes it a lot harder for a thief to get it. Unless, of course, they don't care if you wake up and are prepared to do worse than just steal a watch...

I never actually looked into the prices of insurance while travelling. I have insurance at home. But I will now. Although in my experience I know insurance companies will always try not to pay once you make a claim... they promise the world but when push comes to shove they ignore you and come with bizar arguments why they won't pay.

Sorry to hear about this. I also had a watch stolen but it was a way less traumatic experience than yours. I sold a TT YM to someone who sent me a fake cashiers check (I’ve learned a lot since then). It’s amazing how you can feel violated by someone 2500 miles away, let alone from someone IN YOUR ROOM!
It took me a long time to get over it. Hopefully your experience is different. I also hope you are able to replace it soon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

First of all, my condolences on your loss. As others have said thankfully you weren't harmed.
Second, I would be all over the hotel. If they're in hospitality and customer service they should take precautions to protect their customers safety and belongings. Even if they were not involved in the theft, other people are at risk if this hotel doesn't have appropriate security measures in place. If some thief is just wondering in and picking crappy locks or finding unlocked doors, they need to update. I personally want to know the hotel or chain, because it's not somewhere I will ever stay. The stronger likelihood is someone they employ was aware of this or part of it. |

Understandable...if it was a chain (Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, SPG, etc) it may be worth contacting corporate if the local employees were of no help.

Yeah i'd be thinking it's an inside job. No way, I'd just accept no responsibility from the hotel. I would be kicking up a sh1t storm for them.

Yeah well legally they're not responsible. So you can't sue the hotel. And they're not gonna pay for a new Daytona... so yeah making trouble won't help. It just might get you arrested for disturbing the peace .
