Explorer 1 conundrum
Considering purchasing an Explorer 1 on Monday but can’t decide on which exact model. More than likely going to buy a 14270/114270 preferably around the £3k mark. Not sure if it’s worth forking out an extra 700 800 pound for a good condition 214270. Sure it’s newer and slightly larger but they’re all just as classy. Does this make sense financially? Got a feeling the prices on Explorer 1s are super inflated. For an extra 1000 or so can buy one brand new but will definitely take a whack when it comes to resale. Any advice ? Thank you very much. (Love the watch before I’m accused of not really liking the watch )

Depends on your wrist size... I wanted the 114270 for the better proportions , but the 36mm was to small on my wrist. So I got the 214270, Mk1 with the WG 3 6 9

Get the piece that suits and feels most comfortable, otherwise you won’t be satisfied. If 39mm feels better safe the extra and buy that.

Get the one that fits best! I always liked the look of the 36mm but never gave it serious consideration until it grew to 39mm. I have had a MK 1 and now have a MK 2, I would suggest get the 39mm but again it really should boil down to which one fits best and you like best more than cost.

I am small framed man. I like the 36mm. But that's me. You buy for you.

I came to the same conclusion as you; why purchase a 14270/114270 when a 214270 wasn't too much more. But recommend trying both sizes, I felt the newer 39mm wore quite a bit larger, and bought a 114270.

I would buy new one and would not worry about resale. If you are interested in investing, look into real estate or some other commodities.

I wouldn't base the decision on price. Compared with other Rolexes, a new or used Explorer I is 'reasonable'. As a guide, if your wrist is under 7", the 114270 will be a perfect fit. If it's bigger, then I'd go with the 214270. That said, either size will work beautifully on virtually any wrist. Get the one you like most.

114270
for value for money and a good future investment go with the 114270, Box and papers are a must, they are readily available.. for now,,, I have a feeling this will soon change, for me it was one of the best buys ever
My 2005 Explorer with the wife's 2018 OP.

I had a 39mm with a MK I dial, but I sold in later on in favor of a 36mm 114270. I just prefer the looks of the 114270 compared to the new one.

You also get the warranty and the EasyLink bracelet on the newer Explorers. I think they are worth the extra money.

Make sure you have the ability to try on the 114270. I have 6 3/4 inch wrists and was convinced the 114270 was the model for me until I tried it on. It wears very small . My impression was that it wears like a 34 mm. The current 36mm DateJust wears larger. I ended up with the 214270 MK 2.
The Explorer photographs much larger than it appears in real life. I looked at photographs for months and was completely convinced I wanted the 114270. I was surprised myself when I tried it on. I love the 214270. It is also very nice buying new with the 5 year warranty. |

Some like the 36mm. If you do save the $ and go for it. Personally, I’d only get a newer style lumed 214270.

I think this is purely preference. If you have a larger wrist then for sure go for the 39mm size.
Overall I like both versions, but with a new one you get the new clasp which is far superior than the older version. We aren’t wearing the box and papers, but I think it’s a great addition. |

i have 6 1/4 inch flat wrist and bought the 39mm 214270, try it on first! I prefer the full lume dial over silver numbers of the previous 39mm, also the longer hands and easy link.
Don,t worry about resale just wear and enjoy! Watches never make sense financially

i bought the 39mm MK2 and am very happy with it. this does not answer your question, but i like the 5 year warranty, etc. the movement kicks ass. i also like the easy link, i do use it.

i have 7 1/4 inch wrists and the 39mm fits fine, but that is in the world of large watch cases of today. i would not mind a mm or so smaller. but, it looks fine the way it is.

You can’t go wrong either way. Depends if you like the larger dial or the smaller.

I wouldn't get too carried away with wrist size vs watch size. My wrist measures right at 7.5 inches and the 36mm 114270 looks great to me. Obviously OP, you got to go with whatever you like best, but give both sizes a try if you can.

I'd buy the new model, resale before was an issue but now should only be a few hundred quid loss at most so no bother.

Really you get used to whatever size watch you wear after a few days it feels like it’s the right size.
I really like the 14270 with the holes in the lugs. |

I would go with the newer 39 mm Explorer. The watch is neither too large or small. Updated clasp which does make a difference. For what you will spend in the difference I believe it is worth it.

Agree. Paying more is immaterial if you are keeping it for life. In fact, if you do, it is better to buy it new. I love my Ex1 39 Mk2. It looks so honest and sincere.

The new bracelet and clasp are superior as far as build quality, I also enjoy the updated lume. However, I do wish it was 36mm. Theres a little give and take on both sides but ultimately theres no wrong choice here.
