Incoming, My First Grand Seiko

Thanks to a fellow member here, Bearxj86, I will be receiving my first GS.

I always expected my first GS to be a Hi-Beat. I have resisted the pull of Spring-Drive movements with the idea that they were a bastardization of the purity of mechanical movements.

And in some ways, They are.

In a typical mechanical movement the mainspring applies force on the gear train which tries to turn the Escape wheel. The escape wheel would free spin, except it hits the pallet fork and stops momentarily. The Pallet fork prevents the movement of the Escape wheel until the oscillating balance, pulled by the tension of the balance spring, returns and flicks the fork to the other side, allowing the Escape Wheel to move a little more until it hits the other side of the fork. This happens 36,000 times per hour in a Hi-Beat.... The Fork is the "brake" and the Balance wheel is regulating the time by the rhythmic rotation caused by the oscillating spring....

In a Spring-drive, The main spring powers the movement, but instead of using a balance wheel on an oscillating spring to knock a pallet-fork back and forth to limit the speed of the movement, the wheel free-turns and a break slows the release. The power of the braking is continuously adjusted (8 times a second) based on the reference quartz. They incorporate a Quartz Crystal to act as a timing reference to the mechanical escapement and constantly regulate the movement's release of its built-up energy in the main spring. The power to run the crystal is generated by the free-spinning wheel called the "Glide Wheel" (As I've been told) and this glide wheel incorporates a magnet which creates its own electricity inside the watch. The entire electrical component acts similarly to an alternator without the battery to charge.

I don't think it's hard to believe that if Rolex had invented this, instead of Seiko, it'd be in every watch on this forum.

Still, maybe I will long for the tick-tack of the pallet fork.... or maybe not.

Only time, via a constant smooth-motion seconds hand, will tell.

Pics to come when she arrives this AM.

Quick story time.

Bearxj86 has been extremely communicative and goes above and beyond to keep me in the loop on all aspects. So Kudos to him.

On Saturday morning he shipped the watch via Fedex Overnight.

Later in the day he sends me an apologetic text. Seems he forgot to add the spare links to the box before sending it. No Problem, I have small wrists, send them in a cheap USPS envelope and they get here when they get here.

Well USPS Delivered!

Fedex did not.

Seems Tomorrow is the day for Fedex. So the only photos you get today are the 3.5 spare links!

Congrats! This is one of those watches that I didn't think I would like it ... until you see one in person. Then all bets are off and you start hunting one down. haha
