Sea Grapes have a major connection with the Okinawa prefecture in Japan.
That’s as far north as the seaweed grows, and has been part of the local food for a couple of hundred years, if not more. The plant can be found towards the south, in Vietnam and the Philippines, where it’s known as Green Caviar. Like avocado toast, it’s starting to become more widely aware of, probably due to its nutritional content. The green rubber strap is supposed to resemble the colour of the plant, and the regional distribution only makes sense, given the nature of the tie-in. |

Can you clarify something for me? It's a Seiko, called Okinawa, yet it's not sold in Japan? |

Exactly... This is not the first time Seiko is doing that. Special edition for those countries only, but not Japan. But here is the reason, the limited or special edition is for Thong Sia, which is the Seiko distributor for those countries. Basically, Thong Sia as requested Seiko to make a special model and limited for his markets. Sorry I can't share Thong Sia link because I don't have enough posts here... Thong Sia Exclusive : The ever-charming Sea Grape, in Limited Edition only for 1,800 pcs The SEIKO PROSPEX is a watch series dedicated to professional athletes and adventurers, with the diving watch holding a special place among the diving industry. Since the development of the first Japanese-made waterproof 150m diving watch in 1965, SEIKO has continued to innovate and improve the performance of the watch, and the result is unanimously praised. This year, SEIKO is launching the sale of the PROSPEX limited edition dive watch exclusive to areas of Thong Sia Watch Company. With its emerald green akin to the “Sea Grapes”, one can easily can a whiff of the ocean just by wearing the timepiece. The new watch is only limited to 1,800 pieces, and is exclusively sold in Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore by the Thong Sia Watch Company Group. But in Japan they also have special editions that are not exported. I was in Sapporo in May, I took many catalogues from Seiko & Grand Seiko, with few models that I was not aware of. If I have time I will try to scan the pages and share. |
