What Makes A Great Watch?

I came across this on my feed and although shamelessly branded with Hodinkee, thought it was a nice video. The video was recorded at their tenth anniversary between interviews, member panels, and other events. In it, people like Alton Brown, Jean-Claude Biver, Howie Kendrick, and Hodinkee staff give their ideas on what makes a great watch.

Hope you enjoy it.

Since the need of a watch for timekeeping is no longer a necessity, then a great watch is: when it creates an positive emotional response when you look at it.

I would add quality, but that’s a given.

An amazing dial
Overall feel
Not boring
Iconic reference
Comfort

So many reasons. Some watches, one stands out, others is an overall package.

What an interesting thread! It's good to see what others value in a watch. I'd say that I value build quality in final production & movement, as well as if the watch "does it" for me. The Daytona, for example, is a gorgeous timepiece with a great movement, but it doesn't "do it" for me. I think there are nicer looking chromos. Conversely, I cherish my little SARB035. It's got a very robust movement (6R15), albeit it of less intricacy & overall quality than the Daytona's, but it's put together well & I love looking at it.
