Tried to be a customer, but I have given up!

Hi All,

I've buckled and purchased an Omega, I've been after a SS Rolex (GMT, Submariner) for around 24 months and after much enthusiasm I have lost the bug. The closest I came was a Deep Sea to which I am not a fan of the size :(

I travel quite a lot for work so thought with enough perseverance I would stumble across a watch at retail. How wrong could I be, during my travels I've been to the approximately 35 AD's globally to no avail.

Anyway, just a little vent and good luck to everyone who will continue to try to get their hands on the watch they desire. I've enjoyed reading all the incoming threads over the last year or so.

Maybe one day i'll return if the demand ever drops :)

Sorry to hear. Have you considered buying preowned, trusted seller, grey, etc?

Understand your frustration. Which Omega did you get? The Aqua Terra GMT Worldtimer just came out in Stainless Steel, it’s beautiful

You could have just paid a little over MSRP instead of visiting 35 ADs. However Congrats on the Omega

Nothing wrong with Omega at all
Sucks to hear you can’t find the watch you want and have subsequently lost the passion for Rolex. Fortunately Rolex is not an essential item.

Instead of going out of your way and visiting ADs around the world, I would stick to 1 AD. Preferably the one closest to home.

I visited the 35 AD's whilst travelling for work. I quite enjoyed it at first and helped me pass some spare time between flights, etc. But then it become a drain, having the same conversations with the AD's, a lot who had no interest in even chatting about watches.

I purchased the Omega Seamaster Grey Wave on Oyster Bracelet. I am happy with it :) tried to attach a picture but not sure if it will work.

I was tempted to purchase Grey but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

It’s nice how you refer to the bracelet as ‘Oyster Bracelet’, (you probably meant OysterFlex). Looks like Rolex is still on your mind...

I don't blame you.

Why be pressured to pay more than retail? It makes me feel ripped off rather than lucky to catch.

I was looking for a SD50 for a long time just to try on, and I couldn't find one. I gave up and bought another brand too. Something more expensive than the seadweller, and I wear it more than my other Rolex now.

It’s a great watch you’ve gone for. I’m sure subs will be readily available once more again at some point in the not too distant future

That Diver on the rubber bracelet is one of the nicest that Omega offers in my opinion. I totally get your sentiment towards Rolex. If you want a Sub you should be able to get one quite easily if you express interest and you stick to one AD. But if you’re the type that feels silly to feel like you’re “asking” for them to consider you for the opportunity to spend money with them then I would say just buy grey or move on.
Either way, you have a killer watch. My Omega’s Diver 300 is definitely at the top of my rotation.

I’ve been scratching my head at posts like this for awhile. A sub or sub date from a trusted seller is ~$1000 over msrp.

That’s about $500 more than msrp + tax (in the US)

$500 feels like a small premium to pay to avoid visiting 35 AD and then settling for a watch you didn’t REALLY want to begin with (that’s still expensive)

Just my $.02

Me? I would have waited for a Sub (or paid $500 over MSRP via grey). I just can't get into that grey wave dial. I would be surprised if you aren't back here in a year, or a couple years, still looking to scratch that Rolex itch. Its cheaper just to do it the first time rather than move through a non-Rolex watch or two and then buy a Rolex.

The forum is buzzing with new sub incomings with virtually no wait no history. Probably you should try now. Also trying with 35 AD doesn’t help much, I would have picked 1 or 2 max and kept good personal relationship with.
Too bad to know it’s been that hard to get a watch for some!
One thing to remember and consider, Rolex is not all about SS.

That's a great watch and arguably as good or better than a Sub in many views.

Congrats OP!

The Rolex craze is a product of the times, not really a product of the product. No one should feel obligated to overpay. There are a ton of great watches out there.

You definitely have a good point. $500 is not that bad. That’s not Daytona money where they are asking for $8000 more. There are a handful of submariner’s for sale right now on this very forum for not too much more than retail.

It's all about what YOU want to wear. No bad choice if you're in love with the watch.

Its sad it has come to this. Having owned many Rolex with two currently left in the collection they are nice but they aren't as nice as this current market would lead one to believe. I just let one of my Rolex's go as I let a new blue Seamaster Blue in and it is ever bit as good or better than the Rolex I let go.

Exactly. I happen to like Omega over Rolex. When both brands were plentiful; every time i set out to buy a Rolex either an Omega arrived [and one IWC]. Only regret is that Rolex appreciated in value and I wish I got one when they were cheap[er]. Oh well, I'm wearing the watches I love...

The SMP is a fine watch, if the Rolex bug comes back you know what to do next - Just buy grey. Whether its a sub for 1k more, or a Pepsi or Daytona for +8-10k, it is worth it if it is what you really, REALLY, want, and you don't need to play the dumb AD game.

For now, just enjoy what the SMP is...which is a great watch at a very reasonable price!
