I’m thinking about a field watch. On one hand, I love the new version of the explorer 1, but while I absolutely intend to get one someday, right now I’m leaning towards sturdy and serviceable (and not super expensive). So, my top picks at the moment are the Tudor Ranger and a Sinn 856. I’m torn and would love some advice.

Then def Explorer 2 black dial. Flipped my NF for exii. Where it out on the streets daily as a LEO (under long sleeves)

The Explorer is sturdy and serviceable. The Ranger is a great watch as well. Don't know much about Sinn so can't comment.

You can also look at the Tudor BB36 or BB41 as well which are more inline with the looks of the Explorer.

My other field type watch is a Kobold Spirit of America. Great watch as well, I have the initial release in titanium and manual wind. It was my go to watch for all activities even military duty.

The Explorer 1, in any of its incarnations is great (obviously). That said, perhaps you have not coinsidered the Hamilton for the field?

Admitedly, we have a family legacy of military service during wartime (4 generations). My Grandfather, my pop, me and my bro and my son. Hamilton is pretty fabulous for the cost.

I thought I wouldn't care for the yellow, but now I think it's a nice highlight to a killer watch. The North Flag exudes toughness and self-confidence.

This watch is such a little jewel. In a world of in-your-face, horological, attention grabbers, the BB36 is a quiet little assassin that slips a dagger between your ribs and straight into your heart.

I love it.

And this little beauty, the 114270, is the very quintessence of the field watch genre--the apotheosis of the Explorer concept.

I assume you're talking about the No Nonsense Sinn 856 non UTC? Primarily a Pilot's watch but who cares?One problem.You cannot open the caseback just like that! Look at Hamilton field watches. There have been a variety over the years, and you may find one that tickles your fancy for a very reasonable cost.

Ranger is a great option, loved that watch when I’ve tried it on.

I had a Sinn and it was a little meh for me. If you want to go really budget though the MKII Hawkinge is a heck of a watch for $600 if you like a smaller size. Really feels way nicer than you’d expect for $600. It’s jsit a Seiko movement but mine is well regulated and running within COSC.

My advice to anyone would be try one on, the yellow is perfect. I wasn't sure either until I popped into a local AD. I now wear it daily to work and I love it.

I would just go for it and get the current Explorer. It's not as if they are going down in price.

If you want a less expensive stopgap watch, the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic in 38mm is nice watch and an excellent value that wouldn't dent the Explorer fund much, unlike the Tudor Ranger, although the Tudor is a great watch too. If I were going to spring for the Tudor, however, I'd just spend the extra to get the Explorer if you know you eventually want one.

The yellow highlights on the NF just add to its readability and are not distracting to my eye. The Ranger is great of course if you can get along without a date. Of the two, I prefer the NF and wear it more than any of the others in the "stable."
