Submariner Questions

I'm thinking very hard about an 114060 Submariner. I know the original 1953 Submariners didn't have a date magnifier. Does anyone know when Rolex started putting the date function on the Submariners? Also, has a no-date always been an option?

Thanks!

Mike

The date arrived in 1965 or 66 with the 1680, and yes, no-date has always been an option, but only in SS. It's the only Sub they never messed with.

The date function first appeared on the 1680 in 1966. I'm not sure of the chronology of the non-date version.

As a well known collector once pointed out to me there is a Submariner and a Submariner date. There is no such thing as a non-date Submariner. And so ended the lesson!

It's Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner if you want to be pedantic.

Exactly..

So, the Sub has never had a date function and still doesn't, ever since it's release in 1953/54.

The Sub Date has always had a date and still does, ever since it's release in 1966.

I think at this point, every Sub question there can possibly be, has been answered here.. Can we play "Stump the Band" and see?

What is the average discount I can expect to get on a Stainless Steel Sub at an AD?

Oops. I think that's been asked once before.

Thanks Adam and others!

I assumed - based on never seeing a no-date in the wild - that the no-date was a recent throwback to the original. That's really cool that it has always been in existence since day one.

I'm definitely going to get one. Just saving up for it now. The price is so close between a new and a slightly used that I think I'll go new. From a trusted seller on here of course.

Date or no date are equally collectable and classic, with no particular rank orders, full stop.

I will try to stump the band....Why are the 14060's more expensive than the 114060's? Also, what are the differences between the two models?

Thanks!

The discontinued 14060 (and its final version the 14060m) are generally cheaper than the 114060 (aka the SubC) even when the latter is also pre-owned. Main visible differences are the bigger case and fatter lugs, bigger dial indices and the ceramic bezel on the 114060.

Thanks Adam. In my year and a half on the forum I've not spent a lot of time on Submariners. The good thing is there is a ton of information on here. I think I would prefer the bigger case and fatter lugs. Seems like that will make for a very large 40mm watch, which I prefer.
