Stolen (5513 submariner)

Hi all. Wanted to post details of my past few hours which have really just felt horrible...

I sent my watch out to ABC in LA for maintenance. It was a really nice example of 5513 Meters First Submariner.

They sent it back about a week ago and after about a week delay, my wife found the package today left on my porch already opened, with contents stolen.

I've gotten in touch with ABC and they say the package was insured for $9000, but based on my quick internet research, I'm concerned that FedEx won't cover it because it was "delivered". If you could call leaving it lying around in plain site with a big sticker saying "HIGH VALUE" delivered.

Anyway, I'm going through claims process now which I'm sure will be several months of hell.

Here are my watch details:

1967 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 (Meters first Matte dial)
SN: 1793530

Look out for it y'all! I welcome any advice in navigating this nightmare.

Stolen (5513 submariner)

OUCH. Was signature required? Why was “high value” marked across the box? Was it insured through FedEx, or through Parcel Pro/some third party insurer?

Why would the shipper not ask for someone to sign for the package, hell they knew the value of your watch, it only protects them as much as you, they should be fighting for your insurance coverage! Sounds weird.

Agreed, there should have been signature verification on the shipment. I would ask ABC if they included it when the sent it... I'm not a vintage expert, but I doubt $9000 will cover half of a Meters First 5513 in good condition...

Painful. Hope you have some type of meaningful resolution and the thief is castrated.

So sorry to hear of your loss.I can't believe no signature was required. This is the worst time of year for porch theives. Wish you the best of outcomes.

Definitely should have been signature required. Either the shipper or the carrier dropped the ball and one of them owes you a lot of money and a big fat apology.

Do you have it insured?

Who signed for it. They won’t ship without signature, that would be stupid.

In for more details...

Sorry for your lost and I hope you recover some $$$. The watch is gone for good and probably will be parted out for parts for another 5513 with a different serial number. This really sucks!

Dang /:

That’s what scares me about shipping expensive goods

I once lost some jeans in the mail

In the same way too

I get a message that says “Delivered,” I get there and there is nothing at my door

Call the shipping company and they say “my delivery guy delivered, there is nothing we can do about it.”

I wish you the best of luck to figure out this issue

Agree. And Delivered can even mean that it was left at the wrong address!

OP, very unfortunate this happened to you, and I do hope you are made whole for the theft.

I hope you hear some good news. Very unfortunate that it was left on the steps. That certainly isn't your (the OP's) responsibility.

I'm sorry to hear about your watch. A similar situation happened to me years ago when I purchased a vintage 6694. The shipper sent it via UPS and marked Rolex on the content slip on the package. The watch was posted as delivered but was never signed for. The driver was a temporary fill in employee and intentionally delivered to a different floor not listed on the address. I find out later from the regular driver that the watch was stolen by that person.

Why was no signature required? I would still take them to court and assert that the delivery person could have swiped it with a big red flag saying high value.

Did you capture them on a ring app or security video of any type? Weird that they would return the box with no contents. Hope you called the police and didn’t handle the box. Fingerprints can be lifted from clear tape sections.

They usually steal the whole package. An empty box doesn’t make sense. Very fishy. The delivery person may be suspect.

Not to same level as OP and his 5513, but just going through myself loss of Harrods package “delivered” by DHL (to who knows where). Temp driver, didn’t get required signature, didn’t scan the package at the drop point (for Geo tag), so now it’s gone with all my British wife’s presents.

So frustrating that these drivers are so inept or worse, willing to give us their job for a purposeful scam and short term gain.

Worse is dealing with some customer service person at these shipping companies who hang up on you after saying, “No, there are no supervisors around. We will get back to you tomorrow. The claims tracing dept us closed until tomorrow.”

Story seems a little hokie if you ask me. Why wouldn’t you have shipped to your office or someplace you know it would be accepted by someone. Also in this day and age I’m sure a neighbor has a camera that would have seen something I mean who doesn’t have a camera these days.

That sucks. I'm really considering those doorcams from here on out so at least you might have some info when crap like this happens.

It's package theft season during the holidays.

It's absolutely not your fault on the watch being stolen. Why didn't ABC require a signature for such a high value item? That doesn't make sense, even items that are at least $200 should be suggested to be signed for and not just left on the porch.

I do agree it's a little fishy to have an empty box...

Thanks for comments and suggestions.

I actually tried to redirect the shipment online to a workplace because I knew I wouldn’t be home. I couldn’t get it done easily through their website so I kind of gave up after a half-hearted attempt at it.

Honestly though I’ve had a lot of things delivered to my home before and high value goods have always required signatures so I usually just pick it up at the depot when they knock and no one responds. It didn’t even occur to me that they might leave the package sitting on the porch!

To be clear the package was found already open on the porch, not empty and sealed. Still, I agree it would’ve been a lot easier to take the whole box and walk away rather than to stand in front of my house and rip it open.

Unfortunately I don’t have any cameras on my front door.

We’re filing the police report now, hopefully this helps with my claims.

When my wife called and I heard her voice saying something terrible had happened I had a brief thought that something happened with her or my kid! I was actually kind of relieved when she told me it was just the watch being stolen.

All in all, it could be a lot worse.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel bummed! But just have to keep things in perspective.

Also, why did I ever spend so much money on a watch. Lol.
