If they are allowing you to switch to a cherry dial I assume it is a fairly modern watch like a 6 digit DD.
I would care if I have papers that show the dial color is silver, but if I don’t have the original papers I would put whatever dial I want in it. |

The emerald dial is so nice but 6200 is crazy for a dial. They would give me my old dial back but then they charge me full price for the new one instead of the “trade in” value. It’s like an extra 200. I really didn’t think my dial wasn’t salvageable. It had some white crystallization on it from the water. But it was only like that for a month. Maybe I should just pay to get it back
But they warned me that if someone puts the old dial on it will void warranty and they will never service it again. It’s my first time sending a watch to Rolex. This is my favorite watch I own so I wanted it handled correctly and I figured it would be nice to get service card since I don’t have papers. |

Also the comment about selling it is kind of true. I’m never selling it so it shouldn’t matter.

I’d personally opt for the cherry. It is such a unique dial and one you’d rarely come across in the wild.

I still can’t believe a precious metal watch is less than a stainless sport model. What a weird turn the watch market took bc of COVID and tik tok new jacks.

If the reference number is the same it shouldn’t affect values, but i wasn’t aware that you can switch dials if the reference number is different.

I'm surprised that they gave options for a different color. I thought they'd always stick to the original features.

I’m going to pay the extra 200 and get my OG dial back. I can’t imagine it can’t be repaired. I know Rolex won’t do it bc they said if it peels the pieces can damage the movement.

) If one can afford to wear DD, isn’t a small gain in value insignificant ? ) While most of us appreciate the idea that our choice in watches retain, or at least lose value at less rate than most other brands, must all decisions be based on value ?

There are many more dials available for your 118239 (few options below, ice dials are only available for PT DD’s): Cherry color is cool, but don’t buy just because of relative value, but it because you actually like it (unless buying it to maximize resale value). Since you asked, there is no way I personally would put a cherry color dial on any DD. Silver all the way.

Based on my recent experience having RSC replace the dial on my watch (pretty much the same reference: 118209--the smooth bezel version), the cost for the new dial/labor is $470. So the dial variant shouldn't really be a huge factor in "value": anyone who wants a different dial could just pay that amount at the next service and have exactly what they want. Not saying you're wrong that the cherry dial commands a premium--maybe it does. Just saying: if that premium is more than $500 then it doesn't really make much sense.
I'm a vote in favor of getting what you personally want to wear. Re-dialing a watch to cater to a hypothetical future buyer makes no sense, unless you're only thinking about resale value (a watch as an investment) and not about enjoying your watch--? I will tell you: if you go to sell your 118239 (whatever dial you have), with papers, service warranty, box, etc, you can expect an estimate in today's market of 14-17k from the major web resellers (DavidSW, Crown & Caliber/Hodinkee, etc), and several of them are not buying watches at all right now, as they're overstocked and the market is cooling, as has been well noted here. You could, of course, fare better with a direct person-to-person sale, but don't be swayed by eBay/Chrono24 listings showing watches for sale for like $27k. People might be asking that, but they're not getting it. (This is based on actual offers I received for my watch last week; yours might fare a little better, being the more iconic fluted bezel, but I doubt it'd be that much better.) Point is: buy watches to enjoy, not to invest. With rare exceptions, they're not value-retainers, and there's no reason to believe the recent hype-surge is going to last long-term. |

A new cherry is better than a damaged silver. A cherry dial can't be an everyday watch, though you can always change the color

Well I am not really concerned about the value I was curious bc I have seen them going for thousands more with the red dial. I’m never selling this watch. It was my grail when I started collecting in 99. I love it. I’m gonna change it up since I usually only buy colors. I’ll keep the OG dial and see if it can be salvaged. In 5-7 years maybe I’ll change it again. Thanks for replies. Never in this to make money. The only time I sold a watch was bc I realized after owning it I didn’t like wearing it. I always regretted selling them too
