AP Royal Oak Offshore

What's makes Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore special?

I like one with "Safari" white dial, it's beautiful and the case is rather distinctive.

it has a great history..Gerald Genta designed it in the time that big watches weren't so popular..he is quite a legend in design..he also designed the famous Patek Nautilus...

and also that it (AP ROO),given its steel, was more expensive and has still been than gold models...its said that its a steel watch with Gold inside ;)..its legendary, historic, beautiful and technically also its well made, with a great movement..

its everything one can want in a watch :)

It's a beauty. Actually a cream dial. Lacks lume though so you need to be aware of that. It also is one of the first ROOs to adopt the AP in-house movement. More and more new models are doing that now, but it can be an issue if care a lot about those things.

The hornback straps are great and I personally found that to be more comfortable than the ROO on a bracelet I owned for a short while. I also like the Navi (Navy) -- a very classy jeans and t-shirt watch.

AP must pray every night that they made the ROO. It is by far their biggest seller and though the LE market for them is really crazy, they are making a fortune.

Nice watches. Like the design. Bracelet and the straps are very comfortable. Fit nice on the wrist. Would not mind having an all titanium version in the future!

Some say that AP should change their name to: The Royal Oak Offshore Company, as that is where they make all their money!

I do think they are overpriced, that is partly as the higher price is paying for the Name AP ROOs and status it has, as many other high end makers (such as JLC, IWC, Vacheron even) make similiar just as good, if not better, quality products at much lower prices.

How are the new In-House movements in the ROOs holding up though? I have heard they are having a lot of issues with the movements, compared to the old JLC/Piguet combination movement?

I can only share second hand accounts. The only problem I've heard about regarding the new movements was a date change problem.
The victim of the defective watch wasn't too happy, and recounted a story about the absence of spare parts etc because of a new production push.

Even if it was an issue, I'm sure it's resolved and I'd buy one w/o worry.

That is good to hear!

Watches are like Cars, never buy one in the first year or two of production. Let the kinks get worked out first.

Here's a pic of mine. It's a Royal oak Offshore Chrono, I got it back in September and absolutely LOVE IT! For its size it is very comfortable and have a GREAT presence to it. Watch people in the know always compliment me on it, it is definitely a iconic piece.

I like AP ROO, but everytime I see the chrono, I realize (for now) chrono is not my thing.

No, unfortunately not. In fact I don't think any of the standrad production ROO's have a display on the back. Some of the Limited Editon "LE's" might though. The Royal Oak 15300 does have a display back however.

It has one of the best chronograph movements ever designed.

Chad
That is very sound advice, regarding new models.

Here in Malaysia, I know of at least 2 owners, and one of their friends, who had to send their pieces in. Issues ranged from date change, to winding efficiency. All have since been repaired to the respective owners' satisfaction.
