Great thread. I personally love patina but I can not stand when the hands don't match the patina color and are darker or lighter.

Although I would prefer matching patina as long as it's all original, it's good with me.

Very True Dan. I did not not that original hands can sometimes have a different color then the dial. I always thought the hands would age the same. Then again my snowflake hands are a Slight shade darker and I know there original.

Well, dial and hands, can very well be produced by different makers, using different mixture of paint/binder.......so, my conclusion, is, they both can age differently.......
I'm still a bit suspect of perfectly matched patina on some watches........especially the yellow shades.....

No comment on the yellow patina from me. too much of a Grey area. I have seen watches with yellow patina that I know for sure is 100% untouched and original and I have seen them doctored. Buyer beware.

A particular anomaly on snowflakes, which adds to the mystique, imho.

Yes, another aspect to double check.

I cannot say I agree with you. Many known Vintage watches that are original untouched have yellow tritium. It is not un-normal in the least.
IMO I think the more an all original watch shows it's patina, the more sought after it is by vintage collectors. Take a "tropical dial" for an example. In reality it is dial damage, but collectors love it.

Hands and dials can in some cases age much differently then each other, this is for sure. Back in the day, different manufactures made different parts for these watches, different amounts of material were used there for they "can" age differently. Sometimes they don't.

A vintage watch can be "doctored" no matter the make, model, year or tritium color which is why you have to be very careful. I don't think its accurate to single out those with yellow patina, when myself as a collector, look for even yellow or cream patina. When I find one, I will pay any premium to own it. The white vintage dials don't appeal to me personally because I find beauty in the watches that show their age.

Below is a picture of my 1680 mk6 Red sub. It is all original "untouched" and has a perfect even yellow patina to the markers and hands. A good clean honest 1680 red. Even have the original double box set and goodies for it as well.

SubKing, that's a lovely example. You can see the patina is nice and even and graceful.......what I meant to say in my earlier post regarding the Yellow patina, is, some, and I mean certain some, that I've seen, one can tell its kind of funny looking yellow......anyway,,nice sub, man.

Seeking First Rolex Buying Advice

Hello,

I am considering buying this watch, and was wondering if you all think it is a good value. Also, do you also notice that there is a slight cream/yellow patina to the dial? Thanks for your feedback

Hello all,

Interesting topic, What do the experts think of this 1680.
The dial is, If I am not mistaken a MK2. But the hands aren't. Or are they original? Does it really matter?

Thanks!

Hands are service but still easy to find 1680 hands to buy.

And nice 4-year bump BTW

You know, on second thoughts you might be right. Why lose 10 years of knowledge and discussion, never to be seen again? There's value in this content.

Don't let it die!! Keep it alive! Without your posts featuring brown to creamy yellow lume dots and faded bezels this random thread will be consigned to the next search for patina! How can this be??

Yea. I know, it's an old thread. So what?

Patina & Aging

My patina on the 16750. Its been in the family since 83 possibly 84.

Had water entry in the 90’s. Dried out and sat in a drawer for essentially a decade.

Patina looks vastly different in different light.

Crappy picture but looks pretty dark under direct sun.
