Better than a SS Daytona?

I picked this watch up this time last year. When they first came out

I collect mainly chronographs of all brands

This watch is certainly an interesting watch. As speedmasters go it’s a very good watch for a collector. Rare being a pulsometer. Omega don’t release many of these. It also looks different from virtually any other speedmaster which again is another plus point for a collector. Not only because it’s based on the 39.8mm ck2998 straight lugged case but because it’s a panda dial pulsometer.

Granted these are all plus points for a collector but not necessarily someone who wants to buy an omega / speedmaster.

For me it’s a fantastic addition to my collection as I usually buy watches with interesting or colourful dials.

Even I’m not brave enough to post that it’s better than a Daytona on a Rolex forum. One of the most sought after watches in terms of current style and investment in the world. The ck2998 trade at about 20% above rrp and initially took a few weeks to shift and now they are moving used more quickly.

The reality is, whilst it’s a great and interesting watch it’s not better than any Daytona.



The two watches feel so different. Whilst the quality of the omega is quite a way off the Daytona, ignoring the heft, they both have interesting character vs the plain dial counterparts

Ps I wouldn’t pick the pulsometer as a one watch for life. But would easily choose the blue dial or white dial steel Daytona for life

It’s a great watch and compared to the Daytona, you can actually read the chrono. Most folks here don’t know because they wear their watches as jewelry, the Daytona does not have enough hash marks on the subdials to be read accurately. This can be seen around the 10,11,12 minute marks. And then 19,20,21. Daytona is really more of a show watch now.

I like both Speed ​​and Daytona. I have both. I see no reason why this watch cannot be compared. For the price yes, Rolex is better. However, if Omega had similar marketing, it is not known what would be the best of this duo.

It's hard to pick "better." I've had the Daytona longer, but wear the Speedy much more often. The Omega is definitely easier to read, and there are very few around here vs the Rolex. I bought a Decimeter bezel and use it often.

If you actually needed the watch to tell what time it is under challenging light conditions the OSP, pictured above in GTS Dean"s post, is a better choice, and if you wanted to use the chronograph the OSP is a better choice under any circumstances.
If you're in Macao and running low on money the Daytona is a better choice since it's Pawn Value is much higher.

I own a few Speedmasters and one Daytona. Each piece sings to me in a different way, and the diversity allows me to pick by my mood. I don’t have any ranking of which is better.

Sometimes, I want to enjoy the rugged good looks of my Zenith Daytona with its wonderful combination of black subdial rings on white dial, polished steel bezel and brushed lugs. Sometimes, I want to go vintage with my 1967 105.012 Moonwatch and stare at its beautiful patina. Sometimes, I want to wear my panda dial Mitsukoshi Speedmaster and appreciate that it’s actually one of the original 300 watches that Omega produced for the Japanese department store. Sometimes, I just want to strap on a watch with a fun name and a bunch of Speedmaster nerd design elements.

So I bought this watch recently, and I like it, but it's not better than a Daytona.

The speedy pro is a closer competitor but I'd still keep my daytonas over them...but I enjoy having them in my collection

The daytona is all hype and the speedy is all class just depends what you like. IMO speedy is far superior

Great choice, same here, except mine is the Speedmaster Automatic. Wear it quite frequently, but really don't find it any more or less "legible" than the Daytona, and wear the Speedy when I want to fly more under the radar and am doing potentially watch damaging activities.

I think its beautiful, and dollar for dollar, probably a better watch then a Daytona. The Daytona carries so much hype its hard to determine how actually good it is. Screw down pushers, I don't understand.

What constitutes "better" is sometimes a matter of perspective.
Is the CK2998 the better made watch? No.
Is the CK2998 the more valuable watch? No.
Is it more useful in its primary function as a chronograph? Yes.

Hard to say it is "better"....

I have the CK Pulse-meter and it is gorgeous. I love it ! But legibility is rather poor, even among Pandas...

Personally, the Daytona does nothing for me. It's not that I dislike it, I just have no interest.

I prefer Speedmasters in general, and the CK is a great Speedy to have in a collection. But the standard Speedy Pro has a better chance to be "better" than the Daytona, IMO.

Had both. Sold the Daytona for a Sub and kept the Speedy.

Speedy for me is easier to read and use. While I feel the Daytona is higher quality the Speedy is only lacking in its water tightness.

Your mileage may vary and really there is no wrong opinion on this. Enjoy!

Maybe a M3 or a base 911, but a Daytona is no RR Ghost. That would be reserved for a high end, hand finished, exhibition piece.

I like Daytonas enough... just dislike the non-date aspect. I personally would much rather have the new Apollo 8 DSOTM over a SS daytona.
