Vintage 12:00 plot - The unsung hero?

Is it just me or does this not get enough pub on the forum?

There is a clear difference between a vintage matte dial and the elongated 12:00 marker vs. a modern WG surround. I've owned enough of both that when I look down on the modern stubby plot, I wonder why Rolex did away with the more elongated 12:00 on the dial?

Here are a couple of my pics to illustrate.

Vintage 1680 with long 12:00 plot

Modern Sub-C with stubby 12:00 plot

Vintage 1675 with long 12:00 plot

Modern 16700 with stubby 12:00 plot

Is this a major design element for others? I find that the longer 12:00 plot on matte dials is much more seductive. Discuss.

matt dial is nicer. but harder to standardize. If you look very closely, the triangular marker can be different in each watch. This is especially the case after a relume of dial. With the white gold surround, it is much easier to relume.

Also, with the white gold surround, more women start to wear them.

12 o'clock marker is now shorter to balance all elements in the dial. The 'Golden Ratio' is a rule often used in design, art or architecture to get the perfect balance on things. If you look at the Rolex Oyster Perpetual...inscription it is know less close to the hands axis and more balanced between the 12 o'clock marker and the hands.

So it was changed due to a lack of balance?

I'll take my unbalanced vintage dial all day long!

I don't really think you can even compare the two...I own both vintage and modern...They are both wonderful, but the Matt Dial is far and away better looking and much different then the glossy dials...In my opinion it's really apples and oranges...
I would have to ask why they stopped making the matt dials in the first place???

They wanted it more balanced, I guess. No big deal. No need to get irritated.

Agreed on the 1200 plot. It wasn't until I got my first vintage (1665) a few weeks ago that I realized how enormous the 1200 plot is. I love it! You are right - a true unsung hero. And, unlike a "meters first" dial script, this is something on the dial that you can actually observe without putting the watch 5 inches from your face and squinting (an added plus! - never did understand why meters first is so important unless you walk around with a loupe on all day!)

I much prefer matte. The gold surrounds make it appear too blingy to me.
