Another Faded Insert question...

Now don't beat me up here, but just let me play devils advocate for a minute...

People seem to be up in arms about inserts that have been "artificially" faded.

My question is, why???

I mean, if you like the look of a faded insert, and want to dip it in cholrine or bake it an oven or how ever one does these things, what's wrong with that???
People have watches polished, dials redone, movements serviced...
Now please understand, I am not saying that this is a good thing and frankly it's not something I would bother doing, but if someone wants that "look", why not???
I can see having an issue with someone if they tell you that an insert was naturally faded when it really wasn't ...but other then that, what's the big deal???

I'll tell you why.........

People get too caught-up in the "value of their watch" rather than just enjoying it. If you own a watch and all that you think about is how much you will be able to sell it for later...........I believe you are missing the point. I'm not saying that you shouldn't take care of your watch, or that you shouldn't try to keep a watch original, or that you should put aftermarket parts on your watch.

However, if you choose to purchase a watch and it has been relumed, or it has a service dial, or service hands........because you might enjoy these aspects more than an "all original" watch........IMHO one shouldn't become obsessive about worrying about future value. Just enjoy the watch. One of my favorite watches is my relumed 5513. I enjoy the hell out of this watch

I don't have any problem with it as long as the watch is not
being misrepresented when sold.

Your view on this surprises me Clay. I posted a long time ago that one can put a pearl in the oven to darken it when another poster requested help with making a pearl look vintage and, unless I'm remembering things incorrectly, I seem to recall you objecting.

I completely agree. For some vintage watches for everyday use I think a clean service dial is much nicer to look at that a decaying and old looking original. No idea what that does to the value, but it's not the monetary value which matters to me when checking the time.

I left a black bezel insert in the Arizona sun for the last few months, it appears to have almost not have faded at all. I'm actually pretty surprised, i thought 30 days of 110 degree bright sunlight would do it....

I bet most of the inserts on the Internet are artificially faded and sold as a premium.

No problem for me to fade artificially an insert.
Big problem when one wants to sell it as naturally faded, given that some faded inserts are sold for up to 1000 bucks nowadays...

And x100 with Jason71, ENJOY your watch, the resale value should be the least of our concerns.
