Tropic 39 superdome
Ok, I want one! I'm anxiously awaiting my 1680 back from the RSC and have decided I want a t39 sd. Problem is everyone is saying the same two things: they are mostly fake and not water proof. That post earlier from Buddy Orchi has me thinking maybe those Clark crystals are worthy. I plan on swimming with mine, so what is everyone's thoughts.

Superdome and water are generally a bad idea. If you want to go dome on a 1680 I really think t19 is a better look. Maybe just me. :)
And yes, they are often faked. Buy from a trusted source and the odds are at least better you get good stuff. Lastly I have no clue what Clark crystals are. I'd never put aftermarket stuff on a Rolex. Makes no sense. |

Here is a pic of my t19. It's water tested and passed. Rich ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344128375.100272.jpg

Swim and superdome is not advisable.. Just my 2 cents.

honestly ...id get a t19 over T39...but either way , get a modern service one and get a good watchmaker to round the edges down ..get a very similar look with much less chance of the micro fracture cracks that are the death of old crystals...especially if you are gonna swim in it

Hmmmm.... so I have a domed service crystal on my 1665 - should I not swim with it? It was pressured tested to 660m and I was just in the ocean with it a few weeks ago? Opinions?

Oh, and Pete, I feel ya! I too want an original T39 for my 1665. But, everyone tells me the same thing as you: Most are fakes and if I look at water while I have the watch on I may ruin my dial (alright, a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea).
I think we may need to just resign ourselves to the fact that, unless the watch is a safe queen (boooo!), the original T39s are just not in the cards! I think I'm just going to put the money toward a faded bezel and be done with it! V/R Mike

You guys bite. You realize you're just enabling me to get a 1665 so I can have what I want.

I have a superdome on my 1665 and it passed a full pressure test. Swim with it all the time. Worst thing that could happen would be a slight fog that would require a ziploc bag of rice and immediate sending to my watch guy, but would not ruin the dial or hands. I don't sit and home and kiss my watches in the ear and tell them how special they are.

On a side note, I put a Clark T19 on my 5513, then had it serviced at RSC. They didn't even notice it's aftermarket. They're that good nowadays.

Manufacturer of aftermarket crystals, supposedly top of the line at a fraction of the cost of NOS. don't get me wrong, I'm not endorsing using aftermarket parts. I just want that monster of a crystal look.
Let's see what comes back from the RSC. Rumor has it they have gone back to the non-beveled tophats, so we'll see. |
