Service Dial

Can somebody (or many) explain to me what a "service dial" is? I keep seeing that term. Does that mean that the RSC put a new dial on the watch because the original was damaged somehow? How can one possibly tell the difference? Does it make any difference in the value of the watch? Thank you.

Yes, exactly. In addition to dials there are service versions of most parts- hands, inserts, bezels, etc. including the cases which have their own numbering system.

There are ways, some are more obvious than others, such as replacing a dial with tritium markers for one with modern lume or replacing an open 6/9 date dial with a closed 6/9. There are also more subtle clues that the experts around here can tell as well- you should always just ask, TRF members are very generous with their knowledge.

Yes, as a rule original is worth more than service. Dials are probably the single most important part value-wise although hands and inserts are also...
