New models - How does it work and how do I get one?

I've been on a few lists here in the UK for a Batman for a while now. Now with Basel coming up and the potential for new models, I'm starting to fantasise about not having to wait until old ages before getting my hands on a SS sports watch.

Being a fairly new Rolex fan, this is my first time being around for new models to drop. Would be interesting to hear a bit about how the process normally plays out and how I can put myself in the best position for getting one of the new models if they release something that I like.

When and how during the fair does Rolex normally release new models? Are there any tips on how to snatch one if they do release something that I fancy? Should I jump on the phone to a few AD's or might there even be a chance to snatch one up in store around release day since there is potentially no waiting list?

From what I've read, new models may not be available at ADs for several months after they are introduced. If you are really interested in one, I would go to your AD to see if you can be placed on "the list".

The sooner the better, too. Some ADs may have rules about who can order as well.

New models hit the ADs between June and October typically. If you see a watch you like that is announced, then get your name on a few lists ASAP

Rolex releases begin to flow after Basel, but gradually. They don't release a year's supply all at once, so if anything it will be even more difficult to get your hands on the new models sorry to say.

Good luck in your search!

If you're a new buyer and in London, then you won't be able to get a popular model for years.

Mark your calendar for sometime in 2020 if you want one of the popular ones.

With not much inventory being around for some time, I'm hoping they come out faster this year... But if it's popular you should plan on a decent wait if no existing relationship with an AD. Good luck!

If you are still waiting for the BLNR, you have a long way to go to get Basel 18 releases IMO.

Unless you are dropping big $ for PM pieces.

Buy 3-4 PM pieces before Basel and you'll move up that list quick!

I will be phoning ADs in the morning or even going in person on Wednesday if they announce a SS Pepsi or Coke for sure. I will even offer to pay in full on the spot. While that won't get me first dibs in NYC, at least I won't have to wait as long as someone inquiring about it months or even a year later when you're SOL.

Of course buying a PM model, especially a less popular PM model i.e WG Yachtmaster II or WG/YG/RG Sky-Dweller will definitely help.

Buy one from a trusted seller. For example, mint Batmans go for about what I'd pay in the US sans sales tax. Hulks tend to be more expensive but still doable.

I think now you have to pay in full to stand a chance after the big city whales have been sated. But I'd always have a written 6 month refund date with it, not open ended.

Best bet is establishing relationships with ADs earlier...talk to the sales people....be familiar with them. And get on lists asap.....outside that you can just pay the premium from grey to have it first.

Move to the states where availability is better or be willing to fork out $$$$$ from a grey

To the OP, I see you're in the UK. I think if you want anything new/recent, you'll either have to pay through the teeth at a grey market dealer in the UK, or, go for a trip and get it abroad, preferably in the Caribbean or North America.

You're already too late, the looooong lists are already in progress. Good news is the grey dealers will only be charging 25 to 50% over list price and they're sure to have every model to choose from.

I’m sure my American provincialism will be corrected but here in the USA you can save sales tax by buying from a trusted seller. I just bought a rhodium Ym from DavidSW and saved the horrific California sales tax because David’s business is in Florida.

I know you deal with the dreaded VAT but David and other trusted sellers do have Batmans, and that gmt is a wonder to behold.

Good luck!

this

you already need to be an established customer and a good one too. This goes for the UK in general, but is especially true in London.

In USD, our retail prices are about 20% cheaper than yours without tax. Ours includes tax already yours doesnt.

Could you elaborate on this? Only asking as I am currently contemplating pulling the trigger on a BLNR (in CA) pending what happens on Wednesday. Current MSRP on the BLNR is $8,950 pre-tax. With miserable LA county sales tax I'm up to ~$9,780 all-in. But if I take a quick look at current prices on a site like DavidSW, it's around the same or slightly higher. If post-tax price for the watch new is around the same as trusted sellers, I think it's more appealing to go with the AD and add another notch in the relationship building.

The plan is to get on a few lists around the country (which is what I've done regarding the Batman) and then do the travelling if needed.

if you are not local, its probably going to be hard. Many AD's are now refusing to add anyone to a list that are not local to the area since so many people carpet bomb AD's with getting on every possible list for everything.

Well, the first tip is that if you do not already have an established relationship with an AD, you're behind the power curve. So go do that.

This is very true.

The only way I can get on a list is to use an AD in Italy that I have bought from.

I called yesterday and they will reserve me any new models i wsnt that come out tomorrow.

It's the only way I can buy new now.
