Honest opinions on this watch please..

Recently purchased this from a bricks & mortar store in my home town.

I’m not really a vintage guy but something about it drew me in.

It’s had recent RSC service, but just wondered if it had been over polished??

I’ve never owned a vintage or semi vintage in this case I suppose piece before so don’t really know how to tell.

In reality, it won’t change my opinion on the watch , I really like it & enjoy wearing it, just interested to get the experts opinion on whether its generally considered a decent example or not?

Thanks in advance

The only thing that jumped out at me is the caseback brushing was done more coarsely than originally done by Rolex.

The bracelet clasp looks OK and case isn’t overly done.

The bezel’s scalloped circumference seems softer than original.

I’d say you have a nice Pepsi there!

Yeah, nice Coke! Looks very lightly used and still has chamfers but I do not know much about this reference. A 16710?

Depends how picky you are, but that GMT II has definitely been polished quite a bit, especially the crown guards. They're very soft.

Just compare it to online photos of other GMT IIs from the same time period, and you'll get a sense of what unpolished, lightly polished, and over-polished watches look like.

See below for a photo of one of my former GMTs, albeit a 16700, that had, what I believe, was an unpolished case. Look at the difference in the crown guards.

Good looking watch.

It is victim to the aggressive chamfer look which was never applied to the GMT II.

Whether somebody feels like this is "over polished" is subjective; it's a popular look.

Compare the crispness of the chamfers with the roundness of the crown guards. The condition of the CG's usually tell the story better than the lugs.

Condition is pretty typical for pieces of this age. I'd give it a subjective 7/10...

I thought I read here that those in the UK seem to get these thick chamfers during service. Would be consistent with your location.

As others said, polished but not unexpected unless you were after a pristine example. As long as you didn't pay top dollar it looks like a nice example of a neo vintage piece. The SEL bracelet should make the watch feel nice and solid.

That's a nice looking watch, definitely polished but not overly so. Still a lot of metal and life on it. If you paid the right price I'd say I would be very happy to own and enjoy it.

Congrats!

I think despite the aggressive chamfer, it's still good to go. Besides, you paid for it and shouldn't let our opinions make you feel someway about it.
Enjoy in good health buddy.

Nice piece, the chamfer has been taken in a tad too far towards crown by service dept as tools says, and the crown guards have probably had a little knock and been equalled up at polishing as Aaron says. There is some wear to edge of bezel teeth from twisting it, but no biggie. I like the shade of red (a lovely cranberry - that might have been the factor that has drawn you in btw) that some of these RoNo (Rouge/Noirs) take on too. Lugged and safety clasp model is my end point of interest. Lugless (which had 15% wider lugs btw,) are the start of the rot that went on into the 116710 green hand / ceramic that I personally don't like at all but that's my personal opinion and others will fervently disagree.

Yes it has been over polished. The brushing on lugs doesn’t look Rolex factory finish and the chamfers are weird. But the most important is that you enjoy it! For future acquisitions better to ask before buying.

Thanks for all the replies guys - your comments have been very interesting & informative.

Like I said, I love the watch and really enjoy wearing it, if it’s a little on the soft side, we’ll I guess that’s just how it is, I won’t lose any sleep over it.

I suppose considering it’s 22 years old it’s not too bad overall.

Cheers

As above, but hopefully you didn’t buy it as unpolished.

Hi

No, it was just in the window of the store - I liked it just as is was & bought it without too much hesitation tbh.

No one tried to dress it up or tell me it was something it wasn’t.

Thanks
