To put it quite bluntly, these are not in the same league. Nothing wrong with a CHNR if you like the look, and obviously it’s well made, but to compare a mass produced watch with no production end in sight to a watch that was designed based on the original moon-worn Speedmaster of Gene Cernan, has a hand assembled limited production 321 movement that is the basis of Pateks worth in excess of 50k, and for which there are probably fewer than 2000 examples in existence is insanity. If secondary values have gifted you the opportunity to trade a CHNR straight for a 321, I’d take the deal and run far, far away very fast IMO.

Put them both in front of me I’m strapping on the 321 no second thoughts. Sure you can’t trust omega as far as you can throw a horse but the watch speaks for itself.

I have had a constant repulsion to buying grey at markup and vowed I’d never do it. Then the 321 came along. I purchased an unworn one through grey at 19k and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. It is such an amazing watch in person. Knowing the history and how it’s built just makes my fondness for it even greater. If you want a watch for you, and your inner WIS, get the 321. If you want a watch to show off and be noticed, keep the CHNR. As for the “investment” value of either, you’re obviously a watch collector and not a flipper, so who cares. It’s about the enjoyment of the mechanical art on our wrist. Which do you think will provide you the most enjoyment from a watch collectors standpoint? For me that’s a very very easy decision.

The 321 is an incredibly good looking timeless watch IMO, also waaaaaaaaay more distinctive aesthetically than the vast VAST majority of chronographs from any and all brands…because of the domed crystal, simple and legible dial, and those straight lugs.

Wow, did expect to see this thread up near the top this morning.

For those wondering I did make the trade and If given the chance I would 100% do it again. There hasn’t been a time since the trade that I went into my watch box looking for the RootBeer. Like everyone else has said, the 321 is a special watch. I think Omega did a great job incorporating all the vintage cues and the case of the Ed White (vs using the modern 42mm Speedy) in creating this modern 321!

321 all the way. Far more special than a CHNR gmt.

Got the call from OB for Ed white but couldn’t justify the price for an omega speed master . Chnr I bought it in a sec after getting the call. I think there is so many speedys from the 300$ plastic to the 18k $ ED , omega milked that watch to a point that it’s not special anymore

Congrats! Having owned a 1861 speedy, I can't say that I am willing to go back to Omega any time soon. But if the trade made sense for you, that's all that matters. Enjoy in good health!

Sounds crazy - no way I’d make that trade. And I’m not even the biggest fan of the CHNR -

Congratulations on making the trade. I have always been a pretty big Speedmaster fan. But doesn’t this 321 have a sapphire crystal? Hesalite is what makes the watch so charming. I don’t know, but I would probably keep the CHNR in this case and pick up an 1861 or 3861 hesalite.

Congratulations on the trade that was 100% the right decision from my perspective. I have the 321 and it is indeed very special. The GMT is easier to get in my experience too. Here are some pics of my 321 and one of the original

I would not do that trade. I have the CHNR and numerous Speedmasters.

The CHNR is a really unique watch in more ways than the Speedy, 321 variant or not.

Try wearing the CHNR more and re-kindle that love affair you had with it when you bought it.

I’m definitely in favor of making the trade, especially if the root beer isn’t getting any wrist time

I’d keep the root beer and add Ed.

Add. Never sell a Rolex unless it’s for another Rolex.

And how about you start wearing your chnr
Boredom can be very expensive in this hobby.
