New GS High Accuracy Quartz - SBGP017

Announced today - LE of 2.000 pcs in the currently cool light blue colour with lion’s mane motif.

Golden star at 6 o’clock indicates high accuracy quartz, usually meaning accuracy of +/- 5 seconds per year.

Will probably sell like hot cakes. Price not announce as of yet.

Beautiful watch, classic case.

Yep, 9F is rated -/+ 5 secs/year with the star on the dial, and -/+10 secs a year without the star (regular dial) - although my regular dial SBGT235 only gained +1 sec over 12 months to March 2022.

40mm case, cherry blossom is still the only small 44GS. 10.2mm thick, sounds good.

Nice dial, but I don't care for quartz watches. Mechanical is a real watch..JMO.

Now we’ve got an official announcement from GS. With more photos/renders. The lion’s mane motif, together with the blued logo and seconds’ hand, are stunners.

Impossible not to mention the discussed by us quartz movement, visible through the transparent caseback. This one is the only 3rd case when GS made a transparent back covering a quartz. And 2nd time with such a finish with beautiful blued screws. Just a joy for eyes.

All this at a reasonable price pont.

I got a 9F battery changed at the Seiko Service Centre recently (I could have done it at home but I wanted a pressure test, too) and the technician was quite put out that the original owner hadn't used an official Seiko battery for its previous replacement

Did they have an optional gold-plated battery version?

No but for what they charged me I could have bought ten generic batteries and the requisite case tools. Anyway, it's good for another three years, during which time it won't even need to have the time set again if it runs as well as my other one.

Their website notes that it is sold out.

So whatever is heading to shops is all that is left?

Re-visiting this one after thinking more about it, why GS didn’t spec a “GS” battery or non-Seiko branded battery baffles me.

Have they ever did so? I can’t think of any such case. They may think that Seiko is good enough as a battery brand. Or they actuall run a Seiko battery factory (and not a GS one). Or do both.

Actually they did decide…GS watches spec’d Seiko batteries for their 9F line of Quartz modules.

Seiko, as a battery producer developed their own mercury-free silver oxide batteries. Also, Seiko’s leak resistance was increased by 50% due to a new micro-machine crimping process during manufacturing.

Maybe this is why the SSC guy got a bit upset when he found a Maxell in mine

From your list Paul, I assume these are the same ones. Might get a couple, though I wonder if Seiko might come with a new longer-life battery in the near future.

I'm okay with the choice of a quality Seiko battery. What I meant by my comment is that, since the watch has a display back, Grand Seiko should have taken the extra step to either agree with Seiko to have the battery stamped with a GS logo or have the battery be un-branded and nicely finished instead. I think that would have added more panache to the quartz movement that otherwise is technically impressive but also looks good....

Instead, what we have is the equivalent of a Ferrari or Bugatti showing off Fiat or VW bits, respectively, in the engine. I am not criticizing any of these brands....I just think there should be clear visual separation between them even when there is corporate overlap.

I know what you mean but I don't think Seiko feels the need to distance the two brands to that extent. It's only five years since they took the SEIKO logo off Grand Seiko dials. Seiko has a long and proud history in horology - Omega was putting up quartz movements against Seiko mechanical movements in the late 60s before the Swiss eventually stopped their Chronometer competitions as no Swiss watch company could otherwise beat Seiko. By that time, Seiko was mass producing double quickset day/date movements 20 years before Rolex. It's not a brand that needs to disguise its involvement with its own premium line.

Interesting perspective, thanks for that.
