OP or Datejust for a woman

I'm looking for a first Rolex for a special occasion. I'm female, petite and of moderate age (ha!). Professional job but no need to dress very smartly. No one wears or recognises Rolex in my world, it would just be for me.

I love:

I. the OP31 in silver and

Ii. the Datejust 31 ss / white gold in fluted, jubilee, Romans, white dial.

Very different looks I know, but I love them equally. I've tried on the closest exhibition models at my AD (who tell me I can get either within 6-12 months approx which is fine). I can't decide.

Just throwing it out for opinions!

As you said, totally different aesthetics. Both have their place in a collection.

That said, one is more understated and slightly more versatile. The other has much more presence on the wrist and shines with literally ever bit of light that hits it.

Personally, I love DJ for ladies wrists. Especially with flutted Jubilee. I’d start there and if needed, can add an OP down the road.

I'd lean OP31 for your first since it's less blingy.

You can add other jewelry and bling yourself up a notch while wearing the OP31. But you can't unbling a fluted Jubilee DJ.

Great advice. I would also say the OP!

Both great watches, but I'd lean to the white dial Roman DJ. Seems alittle more special to me. And not as common.

For a special occasion, I would look at a two tone datejust. Really depends on how it would get used, though.

I was debating between these 2 watches as well, in the 36mm size. I ended up with the white roman DJ fluted/jubilee, waited about 6 months. Both are beautiful and I will likely add and OP down the road. I have worn it every day since I bought it and don't feel like its over the top for daily wear. You will love either one.

Good choices and attainable

they could exist together in a collection if the dial choices are right.

I'd suggest the OP as you've mentioned and the TT DJ31, nice two piece collection right there

Just pick what makes you feel the best, and be cautious of internet style advice!

Both are such great choices, you really can't go wrong.

I'd lean towards the OP, I love that dial and agree with a couple others it's just that bit more understated.

This had me thinking what I would buy for my wife. I'd probably go OP because it's just a lot more wearable.

Ah, the perfect reason to want a Rolex......just for you!

As you will find most commonly recommended around here, buy whichever watch you like most, and the one that "sings" to you. In reality, there is no right or wrong answer, but you are the only one that can answer it correctly.

With that said, my pick between the two would be the DJ. I find the date complication to be useful, plus I always like the way Romans look on the dial. Has an elegant look about it imo. Best of luck on whichever you decide!

Two things to consider:

1. DJ has no lume on dial, if seeing at night is an issue.

2. OP dial will look a soft shade of gold in most light due to reflection of the YG hour markers and hands. I personally like that but make sure you do.

The DJ31 fluted on jubilee, the OP will become boring very quickly.

Do you want a date window and cyclops? That's what it mostly boils down to for me. DJ gets my vote.

Thanks very much everyone! Really appreciate everyone's thoughts. It helps a lot.

I think it would probably be easier if I could try on the exact configuration of both side by side, but we all know that's not going to happen in today's market... So I have to substitute imagination, YouTube videos, and asking kind and helpful internet folk so

The OP appeals to the side of me that likes minimalism and symmetry, and it seems more "purpose-designed" as a whole than the build-your-own nature of the Datejust, if that makes sense. I find there's beauty in its simplicity. It's a whole lot cheaper too. But I also want something a bit special with maybe a teensy bit of flash. I really love the Roman numerals, and surprised myself by liking the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet when I tried it on. I'm not bothered about the date, and I don't particularly like the cyclops though I could live with it.

Lots to think about - thanks all!

Hmm this is my concern.

I've written a longer post but it's been held back for moderator approval for some reason. In the meantime huge thanks to everyone for replying!

Ive recently visited my cousin. She wore a datejust 31 fluted jubilee with mop diamond hour marker. The fluted bezel and jubilee is very eye catching. Its alot more noticeable compared to OP31

So my wife was in your boat and she ended up actually going with the silver dial OP34. She felt that the cyclops was really dominant on the DJ31 dial.

All I can say is my wife had an OP then added a DJ (both different configurations to the models you’re considering)

Now she just has the DJ

Datejust.

It's the more versatile watch and is one notch 'up' in the Rolex catalog. OP is considered entry level. Life is short, no way I'd get the OP unless you _really_ like it.

I love the OP (especially if no one wears or recognizes Rolex in your world) it’s an amazing piece and holds its value. I have a DJ and an OP and I think I get more compliments on my OP. Keep in mind if you get the DJ with Roman Numerals there is no lume as there would be on the stick dial. I also feel as if the stick dial shows more of the face of the watch. Good luck and post pics of what you get! Both are great choices :-)

Hmm not sure why my longer post isn't showing up but in the meantime, as I feel rude not replying:

1. Thank you to you all!!

2. I love Romans, the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet

3. I don't like the Cyclops and the asymmetry of the date function but could live with it

4. I prefer the silver OP dial to plain white. Can't get a silver with Romans in 31mm annoyingly.

5. I love the OP dial but find the bracelet a bit masculine for me.

6. I love the simplicity and minimalism of the OP but worry these very characteristics will bore me in time. Maybe.

7. I like the "intentional" design of the OP rather than the build-your-own of the Datejust

8. I can't afford both sadly! Plus I really only want oneso I can wear it every day and keep it nicely wound on my wrist.

I am leaning towards the Datejust but every time I see a picture of an OP I feel a weird attraction. Oddly I have no desire for the "hot" lacquer dials, only the classic ones.

Please feel free to post photos!

Thanks again.

Not a white dial, but you get the idea.

Men or woman...does it fit the wrist? Of course women get away with a little larger to be "fashionable" but at a certain point it doesn't even look like they are wearing their own watch IMHO.
