Back into the modern era, just...
Ever since trading off my Daytona and Hulk as part of a trade to get my holy grail watch (among other things), I've been longing for the sturdiness of a modern Rolex dive watch.
I felt my pulses go up when the SubC ND came out, but then it was too close to the Hulk that I let go. It was a slightly different case when the SD-C 4000 came out. However, I felt it was more of a design variation of the SubC, rather than something technically superior like the DSSD, so couldn't justify spending the money. On one eye, I have been closely monitoring the 5 digit dive watch market, the 14060, the 16610, and of course the 16600. I was quite decided, that it was either going to be one that is a very early model with a weathered look and patina, or a near NOS last of the series release before Rolex went full-on bling with the ceramics. But the fact that I already have a 5513 from 1968, pushed my decision towards the "Last of the Mohicans" of the modern era pre-ceramic tool watches. As I was searching the deepest reaches of the Internet, a near NOS 16600 was bobbing about, that I couldn't quite get out of my head. That single purposeness of the design, driven by an engineering need more than a marketing need, made the 5-digit Sea-Dweller a very interesting specimen, especially so since I was very keen reader of the story of its inception with the Navy and Rolex jointly developing it, the die was cast. Apologies for the long story, but here it is, the M-serial Sea-Dweller in rainy Singapore! |

I enjoyed your story.
It’s always nice to read about the train of thought that led to a certain purchase. Gives me food for thought. Congrats on finding the piece, and cool shot! |

I’m glad it finally came. I was contemplating on selling my 16600 and keeping the 16610. I find that the SD is too heavy for a daily watch for me.....decisions decisions.
But congrats to you, Your SD looks great on your wrist. |

Next best thing to getting a 1665, the original model, is a nice 16600. Very nice.

Very nice catch! And the ease with which you can change out the 93150 (?) bracelet for a NATO ....or a stylish-beater stainless steel jubilee ...keeps things interesting. No shame in preserving the original bracelet from the dangers of commuting and desk diving!

Very nice, I've owned a 116600 and 16600 and I agree the 16600 is the way to go! Sadly I sold off both. I have a similar story, ended up purchasing a mint 14060, just love the 5 digit series. Wear in good Heath!

Nice story, great watch. Most of us go back and forth because we can't zero in on the "one"

Thanks guys. I agree with the comment about us Rolex lovers going back and forth and almost never zeroing in on the "One". But then again, that's the fun of it, isn't it.
