We have an AE store opening here in Atlanta soon. Once it does I'm buying a pair of shell cordovan Grayson tassel. I want to make sure I can get fitted perfectly as they'll be my most expensive pair.

Best thing about AEs is that they offer multiple widths...more so than all the other makers.
Durability is good too, I've had a pair since 2007 still going strong!

Wow, this thread is almost 10 years old... Lol .

Hey Mik - how are those shoes holding up? Have you had to resole them since the 2011 purchase?

I have a pair of AE from 2007 as well and they are in great shape. I still wear them all the time.

Not great shoes IMO, but decent value if you get them on sale, and they are constantly on sale if you get on their email list. I’ve had to return almost as many pairs as I’ve kept in the last few years because of poor QC, but there have also been some really good ones I got very cheap. Temper your expectations and they’re better than average shoes.

X2.

Sad because AE used to be consistently well crafted. I have considered several styles over the last couple of years and each pair I either tried on in store or ordered online had leather discoloration or sloppy stitching.

They were great before they sold out to some fashion company.

They are mass produced and it shows. However their strong point in the past has always been their customer service or support. They are well known for replacing without almost any question any mistake they make until they get it right. Purchasing them in person is one way to avoid most issues, but if impossible order online and if you get a mistake call their customer service and unless things have changed they will gladly work with you.

Allen Edmonds are good shoes but you can find better. It's just that it will cost you a bit more and you won't be able to find them quite as easily. The Internet of course makes it easier but when it comes to availability and trying them on in person in the states Allen Edmonds are extremely easy to find.

My son bought a pair about 5 years ago to wear on stage, when he performs. He recently had them resoled. The Band leader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra suggested he get a pair.

Sadly quality is not what it used to be. Used to be my go-to, now I avoid.

For a bit more I would highly recommend Carmina. The Lasts are a bit more appealing than Alden and the shoes and leather are of equal quality. For even more there is Crockett and Jones and my personal go to for a bit more are Edward Green and Gaziano and Girling.

Carmina. Santoni FAM/Goodyear. Vass. Carlos Santos.

All of which I prefer to AE, mainly because of aesthetics.

I wear Alden shell cordovan. Unless it's supposed to rain, then I wear Allen-Edmonds. Both are quite good. The Aldens just feel more supportive and substantial to me, so they're my preference. But buy what you like and wear the heck out of them.

I find myself reaching for my Bally’s over everything else because I’ve had them so long they’re incredibly comfortable. However I own multiple pairs of AE and Alden and they are great shoes! A good friend of mine told me to invest in a good pair of shoes 20 yrs ago and it stuck. I just retired that pair of Bruno Magli last year after having been resoled so many times they couldn’t be anymore.

Find a good shoe cobbler and you will be good to go for decades.

i have two pairs and have owned one pair for at least 6 or 7 years....and another pair 2 years...I love them...I won't buy another kind of shoe. They are comfortable and solid lasting...plus you can get them rebuilt.

I have a pair of Park Avenues and a pair of Strankmonks, after a slight break in they feel like I’m wearing sneakers. The Strands are just a bit funky with the red Diante soles, love ‘em.

Great shoes. But I have a wide foot and a high arch, so I wear Neil M's for dress and dress casual.

Less refined than Allen Edmonds, but less expensive and the President and Senator are still made in the USA.

I hate to bring this up Tim, but I am having a hard time seeing this with a tutu.

Good enough for most. If you’re a connoisseur you’ll move past them. I quite like the ones I have.

X2.

Problem is it is hard to get fit on Carmina lasts in US.

Still unsure where I am in Simpson and Forest lasts.

How nice would it be to have a sustainable US mid to high end manufacturer.

The manager at my local AE store is a wonderful brand representative who I trust 100% to make me happy. However, it should never be his job to apologize for substandard QC.

Years ago, Alden went through a similar issue with QC and the ability to maintain a consistent commitment to quality due to a lack of trained crafts persons. I understand that they have rebounded and would be curious to know how. Local investment in trade training???

My Crockett & Jones and EG set the benchmark for high end quality. Surely us Americans can meet this challenge. Making high quality shoes, or anything for that matter, should be a source of pride which should allow for the ability to demand decent wage. I am happy to pay more for a quality pair of US made shoes.

Santoni will always be my goto, they last years in rotation. John Lobb if you want to splurge. For loafers, as much as I am not a fan of Gucci, their horsebit loafers are excellent, I have several pairs that have lasted many years.

Mainly that's the problem with most of the better made shoes. Access for most in the states is a bit difficult. For some even Crocket and Jones can be harder to come by in person. I've been blessed with a run of the mill average width feet, Styleforum for sizing advice, and working with shoe store personnel was extremely helpful once I established my size in a few more common Lasts from some of the US shoemakers like Alden and some others. I just can't stress how helpful Styleforum was to me. But then again I was very interested and willing to pay for better footwear so I did a bit more than some might.

Unfortunately for the most part the US has gone the opposite way. Most of the US shoemakers which used to make better footwear no longer do. Cole Hahn is but just one which used to make better footwear but no longer does. My knowledge does not even go that far back but I doubt very much that any shoemaker from the US could ever be ranked with the likes of even Crockett and Jones but surely none from the US were ever as good as the likes of Edward Green, Gaziano and Girling, and John Lobb. I really doubt the US ever had a Shoemaker in the Top Tier.

Alden shoes are nice shoes but there are nicer shoes out there.

Finding Lasts that fit you however is the most important thing when it comes to footwear.

The problem is magnified for people like me with freaky feet, and I do not mean my dancing ability!

I have low volume feet with a narrow heel but moderately high instep. I bought AE 65 last for years because it fit consistently.

I am so disappointed that I had to cancel my October trip to Spain simply because I had a whole 4 hours set aside to put together a couple of custom orders in their Madrid store.

Maybe next year....
