Icon7 TRF ~ Coffee Lovers Thread!

We have been experimenting with Coffee Bean for awhile now. I'm pretty sure there are others out there doing the same.

what Coffee are you trying and how do you like it?
Favorite brand?
What equipment are you using?
Any tricks or special things you do to get that perfect cup of coffee?

__________________________________________________ ____

Jamaican Blue Mountain is normally a favorite but this bag from the Coffee Bean was not. This bag had a bitter burnt bite. Tried different grinds and brewing methods too. Still Love JBM Coffee!

That Blue Mtn stuff is awesome.

Also, on another note I tried my first cup of Bulletproof coffee the other day. Changed my life. It was awesome. Definitely different but great.

Also, look up Phoenix Roasters in Duluth Ga for a great coffe for a great cause.

JMB is approximately $50 /lb. is going rate and we got it at The Coffee Bean. It is definitely one of the best coffee beans but this bag was not. Hopefully when you get one it will be better!

You can have the best beans in the world, but if they're not processed correctly, the final product will not be good.

The problem with the big companies like Starbucks and Coffee Bean (I will say that Coffee Bean is much better than Starbucks) is that they overroast their beans and they roast in really large quantities, resulting in poor QC. Many of the beans that you buy from Starbucks, Coffee Bean, etc... were roasted months ago. Beans are their best within 2 weeks of roasting.

Check out bluemountaingreenbeans.com. They have both green and roasted BM for ~$30/lb.

My personal favorite is Brazilian yellow bourbon. It's a smooth, rich, earthy, chocolatey cup of coffee. I've roasted just about every bean out there over the past 12 years and this is definitely at the top of my list. Just personal preference. There really isn't a right or wrong answer. I also use an Aeropress to make my coffee and grind the beans real fine.

I'm more than happy to help anyone who wants to get into roasting their own coffee. It's work, but well worth it to have fresh coffee.

I appreciate almost any coffee except instant or decaf. Why drink coffee sans caffeine? It's part of the experience!
No skim or lowfat milk when it comes to coffee. Whole milk, half and half or heavy cream.

I love coffee - but I'm lazy. I know there's great coffee out there, but Sbux or a Keurig is fine for me - I can appreciate a great cup when offered though!

what Coffee are you trying and how do you like it?

Small batch roasted coffee from where ever I can find it, however I can never go past Lavazza Supa Crema for a consistently perfect espresso

Favorite brand?

Lavazza. I only drink espresso and it's always consistant. It's my go-to brand

What equipment are you using?

Breville single boiler with a digital controlled thermoblock. Constant temperature is critical and the Breville does a great job and is half the price of similar spec'd units

Any tricks or special things you do to get that perfect cup of coffee?

It's all in the grind. Get a good grinder and don't be afraid to waste coffee beans. I run two grinders so I can have two different kinds of beans dialed in at once.

And don't forget to keep the watches in there or this'll end up in Open discussion.

I have not roasted my own beans, but I do know (to an extent) what goes into a really good cup of coffee. The good thing about coffee now is that it is so popular and so many "micro-roasters" have popped up, there is no need to buy from the big names anymore.

You roast your own beans, right? I'd love to see your process.

Lavazza for my espresso and if using a French press, it is Ethiopia Yirgacheffe.

For the Ethiopian I have a friend that owns a coffee house that roast their own beans in Pasadena. When I buy from his place the beans were usually roasted earlier in the week. my buddy made me the best espresso I have ever had. It took him about 4 tries before he thought it poured right for me to drink. Just like a WIS, there are coffee aficionados that are extreme.

If just me or the wife and I I have a Bodum French press and will buy the best beans I can from the local brew house. Usually hazelnut.

Larry, glad you've decided to journey down the road to a better cup. I'm sure Rolex Addict and other will be able to help you. I've been roasting green beans for about 25 years. Once you find the right combination you won't be disappointed. There's a shot of my equipment below.

★ what Coffee are you trying and how do you like it?
Have tried a lot of different beans. My taste buds seen to prefer Ethiopian Yirgacheffe the most so that's what I use.

★ Favorite brand?
I don't use any brand. Strictly my own roast.

★ What equipment are you using?
The pic below is a Jura F50. over 25,000 cups on the counter without the need for any service so far (touch wood). It uses an internal adjustable burr grinder. I picked up the iRoast 2 counter top roaster before they went out of business. Best scoop I've made in a while. It has a programmable temp and time roast profile feature. This feature alone is worth it's weight ...

★ Any tricks or special things you do to get that perfect cup of coffee?
I was going to tell you the best tip is to roast your own bean in small batches but now that you're going there I'll throw in a couple of roasting suggestions.

1.) Remember when your roasting beans you should treat the process very much like roasting any food with an internal oil component (nuts, seeds etc). Slowly bring them up to temp especially up to just before the first crack. Too hot, too fast and the results will be disappointing. Then you can crank them a little more at a time until the results are what you want. Experiment with different (temp/time) profiles.

2.) Look at them regularly during the roasting. Your eyes will be the most important tool you have.

3.) Notice in my pic the beans aren't shiny. When you see shiny you're seeing oil. Oil carries flavour. When brought to the surface it starts to evaporate and flavor is lost. There will be many who will argue this point so it's up to you to determine.

As Rolex Addict has said I'm willing to share any of my experiences with anyone if they want to ask. Just send me a PM.
