Fellow members,

I'm not a guy who worries about (micro)scratches on my watch; it is a tool after all.

But i was just wondering out of curiosity about the difference between steel and gold. It seems to me that gold PCL are easier to (micro) scratch than steel PCL, because of the diffenrence in hardness.

Wat is your experience with your watches (if you own both steel and gold ones)?

yeah, gold PCL's seem like they can get micro-swirls just by breathing on them lol

I have quite a few two tone watches and I can assure you that every sweater and shirt leaves scratches on the polished center links. It was difficult for me too at first (that was 14 years ago), but you learn to live with it. After the next service they will be like new again!

Polished metals will scratch. Softer metals will scratch more easily. My TT PCLs have swirled up quickly in all cases. Each of my TT watches now has a unique individual appearance, which is a part of what it's all about for me.

Agree. The gold links scratch rather easily!
I used to be OCD; however, I had to learn that flaws/scratches are life experiences, if you will. Better yet, they are like fine patina on a luxury sports car, classic car, etc.

PCLs small scratches and swirls occur exactly the same in steel, and also in gold, and slighlty
worse in platinum, during normal daily wear.

From my own wearing experiences.

Polished steel and polished gold scratch exactly the same I can say with certainty after decades wearing both.

The dust on your clothes is what is causing these micro scratches. A large portion of dust contains sand particles which are way harder than steel or gold.
The difference in hardness between gold or stainless steel doesn’t matter dealing with sand particles.

More obvious, hitting a brick wall does equal damage to both materials in a similar way

My first one was a datejust, a steel one with oyster. I had the watch for about 2 years, daily. I have been wearing my CHNR for more then a year, daily.

My experience is that the PCL on the rootbeer are more sensitive for micro scratches. I don’t remember having as much scratches on the datejust.

This with regard to scratches caused by cloths and shirts. I can imagine it makes no difference with harder objects and sand.

I have two white gold dress watches and I am very careful with scratches, using them little. But so far no problem.

Gold is a softer metal than steel, as such more prone to scratches

Any watch with PCL will scratch by just looking at them. Sometimes they look clean but shine some harsh light on it and you'll quickly notice small microscratches you hadn't noticed before.
