Is this sub vintage ok to buy?

Im planning to surprise my father that has cancer and his dream was to always have a rolex vintage from the 80s... This is i guess a 16800 with matte dial and sapphire crystal... Does all this look original, besides the band? and worth $8500?

Firstly , sorry to hear about your father .On first impressions the bezel looks over polished & the insert doesn't seem like it fits correctly on the edge but that could be because of the bezel over polishing. And not sure about the lugs as they seem a bit thin also , but that could be the camera angle. The dial & patina seems pretty good though ,Also are you happy to buy without the bracelet, as these can be expensive to buy especially if you it to match the watches production year .

How much is the bracelet? Do You think this is a good price? What should I offer?

I think the watch looks very good. The lugs still have quite a bit of chamfers on them.

Bracelet will be around $1,000. If leather is fine, buy accordingly. Seems high without bracelet.

Wish your father the best !

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

Decent 93150 runs around $800-1200

Bezel looks terrible. Compare the edge to this one.

i would not be worried about the bezel ring. Case looks great. dial looks like an early pumpkin faded one. I like it. Offer 8250 and see if they accept. I have an unpolished 93150 from the early 80s you can have for less than a grand.

Thanks I'm not rich and want to make him happy, but I'm a rookie and don't want to get screwed

Sorry about your dad. It is a nice piece (patina, matching hands) , try to offer a lower price as this comes without a bracelet
imo vintage rolexes look nicer on leather/nato straps anyway

And,,,I have a correct clasp for it too.

By the way, what's going on with the bezel? I have never seen one like that before. The scallops look off. Could it be aftermarket?

Dial and hands look great. The picture angle can cause confusion, but I have to admit that the scallops look different. In particular, the distance between the scallop grooves is too large on the watch you posted.

I took some close up pictures of my matte dial 16800 for you to compare (and I appreciate being corrected if I am wrong).

Maybe the bezel has been recut on a lathe which would make the scallops less prominent?
Just thinking out loud.

Got to be honest the rest of the watch looks to be in lovely condition .But I have to say again, after looking at other pictures of bezels that have been posted the bezel looks too polished to me . Sorry for the quality of my picture, but use my watch as another comparison to look at . Not trying to put you off buying the watch at all, but it's a lot of money to pay out .

For 8500 you should be able to find one in better condition with bracelet

agreed. $8500 is high for this watch even with bracelet IMO.

Have purchased 16800 / early 16610 for $6000 with bracelets before.
