Elegant safes for Patek and expensive collections
Called USAA today to add my 5130R World Time onto my valuable personal property policy and was told that it will put my collection over the threshold ($150k) for requiring a safe and they will not insure me until I obtain a safe and send them photos and the make/model, serial no. of the safe. They also would not provide any recommendations or even tell me what type or level of safe I needed, just that my collection needs to be in a safe for continuation of my policy. So this brings me to my fellow Patek WIS buddies on here who find themselves in a similar position and wanted a recommendation on what you guys use? I don’t want some ugly safe and I really enjoy displaying my collection. Any recommendations on elegant safes would be appreciated!

My policy said my safe had to be over 150 Kg (330 lbs) for them to cover some sort of home insurance policy against theft/burglary.
Since you live in America, a gun safe would probably be a better option. Those are all well-above 150 kilos. If you want to go balls-out on a safe, buy a Buben & Zorweg. They do cost an arm and a leg. |

First thing you need to speak to your insurers to see what they require.
In England they usually specify a safe with a cash rating value. eg, cash rating of £10000.00 = contents cover of £100000.00 (multiple of 10 x cash) I'm no expert on gun safes but I don't think that they have a cash rating value making the purchase pointless and would void your insurance. Also why would you want to install a gun safe that is designed for a 4 foot long shotgun / rifle etc when you can pick up a safe to suit your needs a quarter of that size. |

As above - the manufacturers will sell you a safe based on the insurance requirements (usually separate cash and contents value). Work from there.

Asking for a friend: Is it overkill to have more invested in the safe than the contents thereof?

USAA acted like I was the first person to ask for insurance for two precious metal Rolexes. I told the lady to check the policies of some of the Generals and get back to me. She finally insured them. We have over 100K in art, which was not a problem. We have about 80K in jewelry.

Yes I know...I posted on that thread and said the piece was a 1/1...piece unique. But the first side by side picture on top certainly appears slightly offset and gives an illusion the stamp was not level.
